One dance turned to two, and then to another. We barely spoke a word, just letting the music guide us. I stopped noticing as songs transitioned, they just melded together in the background of my mind.

I forgot there was anyone else in the room, all figures became blurs as I found myself only looking at her. She was captivating. I hadn’t looked at a woman like this since.. Heather.

Heather. I have to stop this.

“I’m sorry, I have to step outside.” I leave the beautiful woman on the dance floor and walk through the open doors to the cool breeze of the gardens. What was I doing? I shouldn’t be looking at her like that.

I can’t believe this. Heather should be here, she should be here with me and none of this would have happened. I could never look at another woman with the most perfect person in the world sitting next to me. I don’t want to think about anyone else, I just want her to be better and with me, forever.

I place my head in my hands as I sit down on one of the chairs outside, the veranda covered in small fairy lights my only source of light.

I feel two small delicate hands run up my arms and pull my hands from my head into theirs.

“You’re hurting here aren’t you? Whatever it is you need to do, you should go do it. If there’s somewhere you need to be you should go there.” Her voice is so gentle and I can feel her desire for me to just be happy, even if it’s not here with her.

Her soul seems so pure, a rare quality these days and I hope one day a special man gets the chance to make her very happy. She deserves that.

I look into the glory of the starlit sky before I return to her eyes. Her hands move to cup my face and I can’t help but notice how not a single star tonight holds the same shining twinkle that I see within her.

Her lips move to meet mine and leave the most tender kiss upon them. I don’t move from her, I know I should but I don’t.

“I’m sorry, I would’ve regretted it everyday for the rest of my life if I didn’t do that.” Her voice fragile.

She turns and I watch her walk away back into the crowd. Had we met at another time, in a different life, I’m sure she could have been the one for me but I had already found my one.

I cross the garden and exit quickly through the hospital and out towards where I know my girls are.

I step into the room to find Aleah curled up asleep on the couch and Heather engulfed in a pile of empty pudding cups smiling.

“Well hello there handsome.” She smiles. “I don’t know how she’s sleeping with the sugar high that must be coursing through her veins right now. She ate all these, that nurse has definitely taken a liking to her. She just kept bringing them.” She laughs.

I collect up the empty pudding cups and gave her a kiss on the head . “How were your movies? When did Brie go?”

She chuckles. “Dvd player wouldn’t work so it ended up being a cheesy talk show marathon instead. Granny came about an hour ago. That little baby is getting so big, you should have seen her toddling around the place. She’s going to be a handful.”

I sit down on the edge of the bed and pull her into my arms.

“I love you. I love you more than I ever thought it was possible to love a person.” I just hold her there while she rests against my chest, she breathes me in deeply.

“I love you too, but babe, you smell like a brewery.” I look down at the large champagne stain on my shirt and am reminded of my night.

“Heather.. tonight I-” She places a finger to my lips.

“It’s okay. Just don’t tell me. You have that look on your face like that time you forgot to put the turkey out to defrost until two hours before thanksgiving dinner. Whatever it is, it’s okay. I don’t need to know, I love you.”

I kiss her lips, I kiss her like I haven’t in so long, my hands cup her face and passion overtakes me. I’m going to make every minute we have left special for her. There is no-one that ever deserved it more.

I finally pull my lips from hers. “I’ll take the little poppet back and get a shower. I’ll be back before breakfast.” She smiles and kisses me quickly. I pull Aleah into my arms and carry her out through the back, knowing that I am the luckiest man alive to have been given the privilege to call that woman my wife.
