"What?"

"C'mon!"  he ran forward, his footprints showing blue.

"No! You can't come, you have to go back!" she shouted at the top of her lungs.

"Everyone knows that you want me along!"

"No, I don't! I can do this on my own!"

"No you can't, " he ran, shouting over his shoulder, "hurry up if you want to beat me!"

She grudgingly ran after him. She couldn't see too far ahead, but she followed his blue footprints. She finally reached the end of the clearing, the vast expanse of jungle loomed in front of her. She stopped next to Ian, who leaned on his knees, gasping for breath. She put her hands on her hips, gulping for air.

"You - you didn - didn't have to... You didn't have to run so fast. "  she managed, panting.

" Oh yes- yes I did. "

"Why don't you go back, huh?"

"Because. You're on a mission. And you escaped, and you'd probably die without me."

"But you vanished. You should want to rest up."

"I don't want to. "

"Fine. But don't come crying to me if you get lost."

"Sounds like a deal."  he grinned.

"Do you want to shake on it?" he asked. He spit into his hand and stuck it out.

"Ew. You're gross!"

He smiled, and stuck his hand out, threatening to touch her.

"Don't touch me!"

He ran after her. She yelled at him to stop, but he kept running. She ran, and tripped, and got up again and ran. He followed close at her heels. They slowed to a stop after she threatened to stab him. He came to a halt, laughing. Her mouth slowly crept into a smile, and before they knew it, they were on the floor, laughing. They got up slowly, grinning. It's been a while since I've had a good laugh.

"My stomach hu-"  she began.
Boom! A huge explosion rocked the ground. She fell over and tumbled. Ian lost his balance and slipped, and his head hit the ground. A huge fire raged behind the deep undergrowth. The facility... Debris flew everywhere, and glass and shrapnel rained down. Ian rolled over and placed himself over her, covering her with his body.

"Get off me!" she said, her voice muffled.

"No!" he groaned. A huge cloud of dust and smoke rose into the sky, burning her eyes. Ian winced and hissed, sharp glass embedding itself into his skin. After the rain of shrapnel and metal, he slowly got off her, groaning with pain. She took his shoulder and helped him stand. Tears stinged her eyes, the blazing fire burning bright. A huge cloud of dust hung over the sky, covering the moon. Debris littered everywhere. The facility. Aaron, Kyle. The rest of them. Grief settled over them, the acrid smoke stinging their eyes. Ian started coughing from the smoke, and gasped with pain as the shrapnel embedded itself deeper.

"We need to get out here, " he choked, "before our lungs take in the smoke."

She nodded, and put his arm over her shoulder. Slowly, step by step, they moved, away from the fire and into the jungle. I can't believe this is happening. The facility. Aaron. Oh Aaron. And Kyle. It was their home. How did this happen? Grief overcame her, and tears started slipping out. Ian groaned and gasped. He's hurt. Badly. It's a good thing he decided to stay with me. Or I would've lost him too. They agonizingly slowly gained ground. Soon, they were headed into the vast expanse of jungle.
