Kash struggled with the extra weight of Ian as she slowly led him away from the debris and into the expanse of jungle between her and the mountains. She groaned as she half dragged him, in an attempt to get away from the smoke. I'll have to check on his wounds. Poor guy took the blow for me. She'd started getting sick of people putting themselves in harms way to protect her. First Aaron now him. When she'd first seen Ian step out of the swamp, she'd been filled with confusion, then joy. Atleast he's alive. She hadn't wanted to ask him to leave, but she guessed he'd want to go back to the facility. She smiled inwardly. I'm glad he came along. He'd have died in the explosion. She groaned as she dragged him up to a big tree a few yards into the forest. We should be clear of the smoke. She sat him down and the blue aura shined under him again. He groaned.
"I'll have to take the shards out if I don't want to get infected. " he said.
"How will you take them out? Their on your hands too."
"I'll manage. " he attempted to move his arms around his back, but stopped when the metal impaled itself deeper as he twisted. He hissed at the pain.
" I told you, " she said. She walked around to his back and knelt down, "it's gruesome back here."
"I know. It burns like hell.""Here let me help."
She carefully pulled a shard of glass out. He winced and bit his tongue. They're in pretty deep. She slowly, one by one pulled out about half the shards, when she stopped. The holes are bleeding. And his suit is torn up. I'll have to stop the blood first."Why did you stop? " he asked, gasping with pain.
" Because. You're such a baby. It's just metal. "
She got up and started collecting fallen leaves, and hoped she didn't pick up a snake on accident. The sky is too dark. The smoke is too thick. It's covered up the moonlight.
" I am not a baby, " he replied indignantly.
" You don't know how much it hurts, cause I took the blow for you. " he winced." Exactly. Why did you? Besides, compared to Aaron's? This is nothing. " she said, smiling. I love teasing him.
" Is too! "
" See? " she knelt down behind him with a pile of leaves.
" See what? "
" You even argue like a baby. "
He chuckled. " Gaah! " he exclaimed as she pulled out a piece of shrapnel. She quickly pushed a leaf onto the wound and he stifled a shriek. "Ow!"
"You don't want your beautiful self to get infected do you? " she asked innocently as she spread some tree sap over the leaf to secure it in place." What are you doing? Is that honey? "
" No ,you idiot. It's tree sap. "
" Why tree sap? How do you know how to do this? "
She thought about it. " I don't know. I just do. It's strange. "
" Everything about this place is strange. Zia said it was cursed. "
She was silent for a moment
" Ian? "" Yes?"
"Why are we here? "
After a heartbeat, he replied
" I don't know Kash. "She worked in silence after that. She worked in a rhythm. Pull, push, apply. After what felt like forever, she finally finished all the shards.
" Ia-" she stopped herself. He had fallen asleep. I guess he's tired after all this havoc. She gently laid him in a position where his back wouldn't touch anything. It'll get better in the morning. Then we'll work our way to the mountains. She was tired and exhausted, her hands covered in blood. I hope nothing comes tonight. I should build a fire. She stood up grumpily. She walked around collecting twigs and dried leaves. I wish I had a lighter. She cleared an area for the fire, and laid out the twigs as best as she could. She squated down and her foot hit something hard. She fumbled around and grasped it with her hands. She lifted it up for a better look. It was a lighter. What?! How the bloody hell did a lighter get here? She was stunned. Her mouth dropped open and she had to forcefully close it. What is going on? There's no way this could be a coincidence. She carefully lit up her temporary fire and it light up quickly. She slowly settled down, her mind racing. I have to be overreacting. It's probably the shock of the day. That's all. But her mind wouldn't accept it.
"This isn't right.... " she mumbled as she slowly drifted off into sleep.***********************************************
