Ryan and Max trudged onward, until they finally found the sleeping Rachel. Except someone else was with her.
"Who are you?"
"I'm Chicken Little. Rachel's my friend."
"Right... I'm her brother. My name is Ryan. Can you two... Can I have a minute alone with her?"
They left. He knelt beside his sister.
"It's alright, you're okay, kid, just hang in there. I-- I'm here now... I'll figure something out." He pulled her close and softly kissed her forehead. "...I'll get you're heart back. I promise."
Ryan gathered Rachel up in his arms and sighed, looking into her still face. "Let's get you someplace safe." Now doll-like and unmoving, her eyes remained shut and her limbs dangled limply.
More reminders of how he'd failed to protect her.
Again, he thought, continuing forward as Max and Chicken Little returned.
But I won't fail this time. I'm getting you back. Then, we can go home.
His darkness no longer posed a threat to anyone. He'd started to learn how to control it-- there wasn't really a need to get rid of it anymore.
As long as you continue to use it like that, you're a threat to her.
Ryan reflected on what Riku had said.
He's wrong.
After they pressed onward for some time, it grew dark. They set up camp for the night, and took turns keeping watch over Rachel.
The next morning, as they were about to head off, something crossed Ryan's mind.
"Guys... I think I need to do this on my own. I should bring you back to your own worlds. But what about..."
"I'll watch Rachel," said Max. "Then, once your back from taking Chicken Little home, I'll ask my dad to come pick me up."
"Alright. Thanks."
They headed off into the Lanes Between, "So, which one is it?"
Sitting in the basket on the glider, Chicken Little squinted, then pointed to someplace a short distance away.
"Is that it?"
"Yeah!"
He landed the glider, and then returned after seeing his acquaintance off.
After that, Goofy came and picked up his son.
Ryan scooped Rachel up and wandered aimlessly along the dirt road, until he saw... her.
It was Maleficent.
