Shoving his hands into his pockets, Varian stepped off the porch and headed down the driveway towards the mailbox. December had come, and it would be a couple days before Nathan came back.

In the meantime, he fought off the crippling migraines as best as he could, never having wished for a slower metabolism more in his life. A spikey pressure dominated his temples and back of his head, but he did his best to ignore it.

Fat lot of good that did him, and he pulled a hand from his pocket, futilely trying to ease the pain by rubbing small circles into his temple. His pulse throbbed beneath his fingers and he hissed. He wasn’t sure how much more he could take. Medication of any kind, no matter how weak it was, was preferable to this torture.

He couldn’t even see as clearly as usual, the sunlight hitting the snow and drilling into his eyes. Screwing them as closed as he could manage without blinding himself, he made his way to the mailbox, reaching out to open it and pull out a few envelops.

Squinting at them, he made out two bills and one envelope from the donor clinic. Flipping to that one, he turned it over and tore it open.

To Varian Joll,

Your blood test results for entering the donor program came up contaminated. On the grounds of a possible safety breach, we cannot permit you to safely enter the program.

He had to read the short statement again before his mind would let him process it, and he swore, wincing at the pressure in his skull.

Something wrong?”

Snapping his head up, Varian blinked, a young woman stood before him in a blue, fur-lined hooded coat and tan, knee-high boots.

Jecklynn-”

She held up her hands. “I wasn’t coming to the farm. I was out for a walk and heard you.”

Eying her warily, Varian sighed, rubbing some more at his temple. “These damn headaches.”

She held her ground, though looked like she wanted to step closer. His eyes weren’t deceiving him, were they? Her hair was blonde?

Blinking to clear the fuzziness, he tilted his head to the side. “Your hair.”

She reached up, pulling a lock from her hood. “It went back to blonde when you rejected me. Part of the whole Nether business.”

Clutching the paper in his hand, he hesitated before stepping forward and handing it out to her.

My bloodwork came up contaminated. They won’t let me enter.”

Taking it gently from him, she smoothed it out and read the paragraphs to herself. “You’re a Changed vampire. Your blood work will always come up contaminated to human testing.”

She held it out to him and he took it, sliding it back in the envelope and then into one of his pockets.

Well, it complicates matters. As if they weren’t shitty already.”

Jecklynn winced a little and sighed. “Call and see if you can do anything about it.”

Varian went to respond to her when his headache flared and he hissed again, pressing his palm to the side of his head. Two hands came up and gently touched his face, one moving to touch his wrist, the other his cheek. He froze, glaring at Jecklynn.
