“So, what do you have there?”

“Blood.”

George gave Nathan a flat look at the response, and Nathan shrugged. “It’s what I have.”

“Whose blood, though, is the question.” George clarified. Nathan sighed quietly, adjusting the microscope he was using.

“Changed blood.”

“How’d you get it?”

Nathan sighed again, louder as he turned to look at George. “My partner. Is that okay with you? Can I, you know, work now?” he asked. George held his hands up, backing off toward his own station.

“Okay, touchy. Have fun,” he said. Nathan rolled his eyes a little, putting a drop of Varian’s blood on a slide before debating on what to mix it with. He had human blood, Mortal blood, and some other Changed blood. Shrugging to himself, he decided to go with the human blood first, adding a drop of it as well and looking through the lens.

The red blood cells didn’t do much, just hanging around. The white ones though, they integrated together with themselves, and sort of formed a second protective unit. But other than that, no change, as pretty much expected.

“Well that was boring,” Nathan muttered to himself, sighing as he reached for a new slide. Another drop of Varian’s blood, and this time a drop of Mortal blood. The reaction was almost instantaneous, the Mortal blood cells being taken over within seconds. It was like the previous reaction with the contaminated blood, but a hell of a lot faster. Well then.

The third slide was with Varian’s blood, and the Changed blood. Varian’s white blood cells latched onto the foreign ones, merging with them before spreading out and destroying any pathogen they came across.

Those white blood cells were intense. Nathan hummed as he watched, figuring that yes, Varian had weird blood.

Made for a cool experiment though.

Nathan removed the slide from the microscope and leaned back in his chair for a minute, tapping his pen against the notebook he’d been using for notes again. He still had plenty of blood to play with from Varian, and a thought crossed his mind that made him glance down at his hand, wiggling his fingers.

How did Varian’s blood react to his own? Being mates, he figured it would do something at least moderately interesting. Plus there was the fact that Nathan’s blood didn’t Change.

Making up his mind, Nathan prepared another slide with a drop of Varian’s blood before glancing around the lab. “I need a needle,” he said.

George was the one who turned to look at him and frowned. “Why do you need a needle?”

“For science.”

“That’s as good a reason as any.” Michael spoke up, opening one of the drawers by him and digging around for a second before taking out a small box. “Do you actually need to draw something, or just need the needle?”
