"Do you know anything about the Board Jecklynn?" Varian asked, pulling his legs up to his chest and watching her from his seat on the couch. She sat near him on the floor in front of him.

Her dark eyes lifted in thought, eyebrows furrowing as her pink lips formed a thoughtful slant. "What about it exactly?"

"I was just wondering," Varian answered, studying the girl in front of him. He'd invited her over at Helen's prompting. She was worried he'd mope around too much with Nathan gone.

Now, here Jecklynn sat, in a pink hoodie with white floral designs and white leggings.

"I know that it deals with the different vampires and the culture. What exactly are you asking about?"

Varian sighed. "I wanted to know why my father would despise it so much. That's all."

Jecklynn's expression softened and she reached out and placed a hand on his knee. "Every good thing has a bad side to it, Varian. Just like every bad thing has a good side to it. I'm not sure what I know that would help you."

"It doesn't matter. I guess I'll keep reading," he answered, looking at the hand on his knee, but surprisingly, not minding it.

Jecklynn scooted closer and leaned in so they were very near one another. "How are you doing anyway? I'm sorry about the terms we parted on last. Forgive me?"

How could she expect him to forgive her so easily? Worse yet, how could he expect himself not to?

"Of course I forgive you," he said quietly. "But don't antagonize my boyfriend. It hurts both of us when you do that."

She scowled at him. "I don't antagonize your friend. We just don't get along very well."

Rolling his eyes, Varian went to pull away, but Jecklynn snagged his wrist and held him firmly in place, which momentarily scared Varian as the shock of it set in before fading. She shouldn't be able to stop him so easily. Let alone hold him still. It was a little bit frightening.

"Let go of me please," he said quietly.

She looked at him a little surprised. "Varian?"

He shook his head, averting his gaze from her. "Please, let me go. I don't like people doing that to me."

Releasing him slowly she scooted closer and stretched up to plant a gentle kiss on his forehead. "Sorry. I didn't know. I won't do it again."

Blinking in confusion, Varian paused, unsure of what to say. What could he say? This was odd, but he couldn't bring himself to actually dislike it. That thought terrified him. Almost as much as losing Venerra.

Nathan wasn't too surprised, to be honest, when Vince found him, Thomas, and Skyler when they were eating lunch.

"Hey, we're in Ace's class together. You're the gay guy," Vince said as a greeting, sitting beside Nathan with a smile.

"Uh...yeah, I guess so," Nathan mumbled. Vince chuckled, leaning back in the seat as he looked over to Thomas and Skyler.

"Who are you guys?"

"Thomas and Skyler," Nathan filled in. Vince nodded to them.

"I'm Vince, Nathan and I have a class together."

Skyler only nodded as Thomas mumbled a greeting past a full mouth, making Vince laugh before turning back to Nathan. "So, what do you think of our amazing professor?"

"I like him. I think he's pretty cool. Plus, he got me a free trip down to Mandan," Nathan said with a small shrug.

"Yeah, that was pretty cool. That Zach guy, man. He's an asshole. Had him in a class last year. Arrogant little dick," Vince mumbled with a sneer. Nathan couldn't help but mentally agree.
