Venerra asked Varian questions the whole way home, all of them centering around Jecklynn and her pregnancy.

“When’s she going to have her baby?”

“January some time.” Varian replied, keeping his attention on the road. “Somewhere near the end of the month.”

“Can I see it when it’s born?”

Smiling a little, he glanced at her for a brief moment. “That’s up to Jecklynn. It’s her baby.”

“But it’s not just her baby.” Venerra protested. “It has a daddy, doesn’t it?”

Varian flinched, his shoulders tensing. “Yes, technically, it does.”

“You’re upset.”

Sighing, Varian tried to relax. “No, I’m alright Venerra. It’s just a lot to take in is all. She was perfectly fine up until now.”

“What happened?”

“Her placenta’s detaching. Or, at least, it tried to. The doctors stopped it.”

She sank into thoughtful silence at that, tapping the tips of her fingers together in her lap until they pulled in the drive and up to the house. Nathan’s car was back, so now Varian had another fun conversation to have. This time with someone who knew the full details of what was going on.

Exhaling quietly, he got out of the truck, Venerra spotting Bob coming out of the barn.

“Bob, here Bob,” she called, patting her legs. The cat looked over at the sound of his name and came bounding up to her.

She squatted down and pet him, scratching under his chin. He arched his back and flicked his ears as he purred.

Smiling, Varian climbed the steps of the porch and went inside. Venerra would do her own thing eventually. Right now he had a conversation about his emotions to discuss with his mate. Who he found in the kitchen making himself a sandwich.

“Hey.” Varian greeted, going over to join Nathan in making himself one too.

Nathan glanced over to Varian. "Hey. Where'd you guys go?"

“The hospital. Jecklynn’s having problems.” It was easier to just outright say what the root of the matter was. Nathan would probably appreciate that better.

"Oh. Is she gonna be okay?"

“They’re keeping her there,” he said, inspecting the ingredients Nathan had for his sandwich. There was cheese, lettuce, and tomato. None of it sounded particularly appealing. The cheese, maybe, for the calories it’d give, and small amount of protein.
