“He seemed friendly.”

“He seemed weird.”

“How? He was the only one that showed up here in clothes that actually matched the job, Millie.”

"Maybe it was my plan to have them show up in stupid clothes."

Sighing, Varian shook his head, looking at the application in question resting on the register counter. Reaching out, he pointed to the age. “He’s an adult. Nineteen.”

"Nineteen is no more of an adult than forty-five is a senior citizen."

“I was sixteen when you hired me.”

"I liked you. I don't like him. And you better not take that for granted. I don't even tell my own nephew I like him." Millie said, pointing a finger at Varian.

“Liked is past tense.” Varian replied, raising his eyebrows.

He was really having difficulty understanding why Millie was so against everyone that’d come in for their interviews. He’d gone through all the applications himself and weeded out the good and the bad candidates. They had a decent crop of people to pick from, and every single one of them Millie found something to shoot down.

"Exactly. I liked you at sixteen. I still like you. Stop getting on my back, I'm old," she said, narrowing her eyes at Varian.

“Fine,” he huffed, waving his hand and clucking his tongue thoughtfully. “He had a good handshake. Callouses. Could handle transportation of goods between storage and stock.”

"The state of someone's hands are not going to make me hire them. I don't care if they are as soft as angel feathers or as rough as sandpaper."

“I’m seriously beginning to question your judgement in your advanced age.” Varian said, smiling widely as he did.

"Older means wiser. As far as you know I'm a genius."

Rolling his eyes, Varian chuckled as he grabbed the application and flipped it over, setting it off to the side in a definitive manner. “Alright. He’s out. And so am I. I’ve got a hospitalized coworker to see.”

"Oh fine, leave me here all on my own. It's dangerous to leave older people alone you know. What if I fall down? Who's helping me up? Life Alert?"

“Life Alert?” Varian asked, furrowing his brow as he stepped away from the counter to go take off his apron and hang it up.

"Yeah. That thing for old people. You push a button and an ambulance shows up to haul you off to a senior center or some shit." Millie said, waving it off.
