Natalie has been complaining of spinal discomfort lately, so I took her into the clinic to get checked out. They had her in an examination room for over an hour, while I sat nervously in the waiting room.

Several nurses stood off to the side, giggling. They were entertaining the thought that most people have about Changed vampires, especially when it concerns a couple coming into the clinic about pain.

“I wonder if she’s alright? Do you think the sex is really that rough?” one of them whispered to the other. They weren’t being very covert about it. I found it rather annoying.

“I’ve seen women come in with fractured hips before. They’re that desperate to have babies, they think the harder they do it, the better chance they’ll have.”

Another nurse covered her mouth with her hand, eyes wide. “With how often they do it, can you imagine how good they’d be?”

At this point I was fed up with the women and just ignored them until a doctor called me over.

“She’s fine, don’t worry, but the baby’s positioned so that it keeps kicking her spine. It’ll be quite uncomfortable for her for the next month or so.” the doctor told me.

  “Baby?” I’d asked stupidly.

She smiled at me. “Yeah, Natalie’s about three months along. Would you like the ultrasound?”

How could I say no? Natalie was with child again.

It was for him. His mother was pregnant for him, and his father seemed so excited. Thumbing the edge of the page a little, Varian turned to the next entry.

I like to lay with Natalie at night, so that I can hear the child within her. If I close my eyes, I can hear him move, a gentle sloshing, different from Natalie’s digestive system. And if I’m particularly lucky, he’ll kick for me. Right into the palm of my hand.

It truly is a miracle to watch and feel a child grow. I like talking to him, hoping that he hears me as well as I hear him. I’ll sing to him on restless nights, so Natalie can sleep. And if she doesn’t protest too much, I’ll break out my guitar and play a few melodies.

I’m excited for the birth of my son, despite his conception circumstances. I hope that he’ll forgive me.

So he was then. He was genuinely happy for it. Sucking on his lower lip, Varian smiled a little, but was drawn from his reverie at a knock on his door. Looking up, he slowly slid the journal over onto the side table before he got up and crossed to answer the door.

Andrea stood there, holding the carrier containing her son who was happily making all kinds of baby noises, everything from gurgling to little yells. "Oh, wow, you okay?" she asked.

“Yeah, I’m okay.” Varian answered, reach up to wipe away the moisture from his eyes. “I was just reading. I didn’t hear you, sorry.”

"It's fine, it's not like I called or anything. I wasn't even sure if you'd be here, but I thought Curran might like some outside time," she replied, smiling down at Curran, who looked up at his mother and held his arms out to her.
