Jecklynn left shortly after she told him the news, but it was the news that kept running through his head. She was pregnant. On the first try.
It was over. He’d done his duty, and now he could leave her to it. At least, that’s what he wanted to say, but a large part of him was mad at himself for thinking that. She was pregnant, yes, it was what she wanted, yes, but it was his kid.
He wasn’t sure how long he sat on the front porch, lost in his thoughts, but at some point Nathan had gotten home, because he walked over to the porch and sat next to him on the steps. Neither of them said anything at first, Varian content in his thoughts, Nathan probably with his. They didn’t need to say anything, but he was still happy to see Nathan.
It showed with the smile that he gave him, shifting on the step to see him better.
"Got kicked out of the hospital. Kicked out of Millie's store." Nathan sighed, shaking his head before turning to smile at Varian. "So I'm back."
“Millie’s not a surprise. Justin get tired of you already?”
"Eh. Well. I say kicked out, but it was more like politely excused. He's just tired. That and Evan's not there, so he's all...depressed. Again."
In a moment, Varian’s smile faded and he felt his brow crease. “Evan’s not there? After how hard his mom worked to get him in? Where’d he go?”
Nathan sighed. "He got too sick to stay."
“Sick?” Varian echoed. How in the world was Evan sick? He was a Changed vampire. Changed vampires don’t get sick. Sure, he’d managed to do so, but that was only after he’d bitten himself. He’d told Evan countless times not to do that, and while he didn’t think Evan would be stupid enough to try, the thought still lingered.
Nathan froze for a second before glancing away. "Oh yeah," he murmured under his breath, clearing his throat quietly.
“Nathan. What do you know that I don’t?”
How did Nathan know that Evan was sick and he hadn’t? Evan was his charge. Out of everyone, he should be one of the first people to know.
Nathan inhaled and winced at himself before sighing heavily, closing his eyes for a second. "Evan's been...kinda sick, for a while now. He wasn't too bad earlier, but recently, it seems like it's gotten...worse."
Varian felt his expression shift, unsure of what his facial muscles were doing. His stomach coiled tightly, a cold kind of dread, but relief hit him too. “If it’s been going on for a while, then he wasn’t an idiot.”
Nathan raised an eyebrow, glancing at him.
“Changed vampires don’t get sick.” Varian stated, shaking his head. “How can he?”
