That was our first meeting. I really don't know him and his sister at first. I have no intentions of knowing them... of knowing him because I was busy dealing with the problems and issues which started arising on the day of the tryout for the National Team.

But then, fate don't play fair. Fate knows its power to rule and make miracle in someone's emotion, in someone's heart.

I got it all wrong.

"Wala kang pasok Duchess?" iyon agad ang bungad ni Daddy nang dumulog ako sa hapag, umaga ng mismong araw ng tryout. Napansin niya yata ang suot ko kaya agad siyang nagtanong. "I am excused. Chairman approved it," tipid kong sagot. Lumapit sa akin ang isa sa mga katulong at nagsalin ng tubig at juice sa aking baso. I muttered my thanks to her.

Two weeks after that night in the Music Hall, the PNVF announced the tryout and I got invited. Coach told me all the details that's why most of my time after class was spent in practicing, doing different drills and enhancing my skills. Even my Saturdays were spent on my practice. Linggo lamang ang paghinga ko because Sunday for us is family day.

"You're not giving that sports up, Duchess? Hindi ka na pinayagang makapasok," my Mommy said and turn her head on me. Dahil magkatabi lamang naman kami, madali kong nakita ang kaunting pagkadismaya niya.

"I will never, Mom. You know that," I simply said. That's my dream. I am happy with it. Gusto ko iyong idugtong ngunit alam kong hahaba na naman ito at masisira na naman ang umaga naming dalawa. Besides, I need to maintain my good condition because this day is a big day for me. Negative thoughts shouldn't be entertained.

I heard her sighed. I did the same and looked at my food instead. The truth is, hindi naman talaga siya tutol sa paglalaro ko, iyon nga lang, may iba siyang gusto na gawin ko.

She's a supportive mother but sometimes, she's trying to change my mind trying to open the possibilities of giving my career up.

"Why don't you send your application in Binibining Pilipinas like your Ate Agatha?"

"Ang puso ko ay nasa court. Wala sa entablo ng mga beauty queen." Agad kong sagot at sumimangot. I heard the triplet's laughed and my Dad too. Nakita siguro ang pagsimangot ko. Kalaunan, nakitawa na rin si Mommy.

"Akala ko lang nagbago na nag isip mo. Hindi pa pala. Siguro naman ay ako ang una mong sasabihan kapag gusto mo nang rumampa, Duchess."

"Sure Mommy," I said kaya mas lalo silang natawa. Alam kasi nilang hindi iyon mangyayari.

"Bakit nga pala biglang nagka-tryout? Dati naman ay wala," asked Shawn, creasing his forehead at me.

"They all think our Duchess here is too young for the team without knowing she's a monster inside the court," si Calum ang sumagot. Nagtaas siya ng kilay sa akin bago sumimsim sa kaniyang baso.
