Chapter Twenty-Three

Reece’s POV

“Sweetie, I can have someone stay with you,” my mom says to me as I sit on my comfortable bed. She is getting ready to go to work and is being all motherly and freaking out.

“No mom, I am a big kid. I don’t need a babysitter,” I groan as I lean against my headboard.

“Well Conner only has one class today so he will be home in an hour or two.  Keep your phone on you at all times and call if you need anything. Your cane it still beside you,” she says to me and I nod my head. I am a little annoyed by the fact that she is treating me like I am five!

“Got it mom, I am fine. I can handle it,” I grunt and I stare straight ahead.

“Ok, ok,” she says giving up. “I will see you later. I love you son,” my mom says as I hear her step closer to me and then I feel her lips press against my forehead in a motherly way.

“I love you too mom,” I say and then I hear her heels click against the floor as she leaves the room. I don’t hear the door shut so I figure she left it open.

I slide down my bed until my head rests on the pillow and pull the headphones from around my neck. I then place them in my ear as I lay back in my bed facing the ceiling. “Play music,” I command and the music begins to feel my ears.

Slowly my eyes drop shut and my mind just hears the music as I near sleep. I haven’t been able to get a lot of sleep lately. Night mares have been haunting me dreams.

I see the track lying ahead of me and the stands are full of supporters. I scot down in starting position with my rear end in the air and I glance to my left seeing the turf with my teammates standing on top of it. Then I glance to my right to see the other runners lined up on their spots. I rock on my heels as I wait for the gun to fire.

Bang! The gun sounds and I push off my weight and begin to run, taking the lead.  As I round the first turn of the track, I take a nice lead from the others. I shut my eyes gently and let my feet carry me around the track that is imprinted into my brain.

Lap after lap I allow the cooling air to brush my face as I continue to run. I tear my eyes open as I look to my side seeing a guy a good distant back. So I keep running and see the blue ribbon ahead of me and push my legs harder. Finally it breaks across my waist and a large smile stretches across my face as I hold my arms in the air. Arm wrap around me and I look around into the faces of my cheering teammates.
