"Poor guy, he probably feels weird around you. You're making him feel older than he is." Salma sighed.
"Haba, you know that's not my intention." I mumbled.
"Well, you make it seem like it." She shrugged.
"Ugh. Now I don't even know how to face him. I have no more lectures for the rest of the day and I'm supposed to resume work today so I need to go." I told her.
"I still can't understand why he employed you when he actually doesn't have a secretary at the moment. I mean, he does know you're working part time right?" She asked.
"Yes oh. We agreed on that but I guess he knows what he's doing. My own is to work and get paid."
"Yup, that's priority." Salma agreed.
"Okay, I'm leaving now." I said as I got on my feet.
"Alright now. Take care." She waved at me as I walked off.
I called an Uber and got in as soon as it came. I told the driver the location and he drove there.
The car stopped in front of a tall glass building. A huge sign atop the building read 'SANI LTD' and I knew that I was at the right place.
According to his directions, I was to go up to the 7th floor after being permitted by the receptionist.
I walked into the lobby and strode over to the front desk where the receptionist stood behind.
I greeted her, "Good Afternoon, My name is Karimah Usman. I'm here to see Mr Sani. The CEO."
She answered, "Okay, but do you have an appointment with him?"
I nodded, "I'm going to start working here."
"Sure, I'll just give him a call and let him know you're here." She said.
I watched as she punched in some numbers on the telephone and dialed it.
"Sorry to bother you Sir... Someone is here to see you...Yes, it's a lady. Her name is- Okay sir." She ended the call.
"He said to send you to the seventh floor. That's where his office is located." She told me.
I nodded with a smile before going over to the elevator. I went in and pushed in the button with the number 7 engraved on it.
I waited patiently until the doors slid open and walked out. I found myself taking turns upon turns not knowing where exactly was his office.
Then I was in front of two huge brown doors. I felt like it was his office because it gave me this 'office vibe'.
So I knocked on the door.
To my expectation, he called, "Come in,"
I smiled mentally praising myself as I slowly pushed the doors wide open.
There he was sitting in a relaxed position on a plush cushion while sipping on a cup of coffee.
There was another cup set at a side of the coffee table, the side which faced another cushion.
"Please, come and have some coffee with me." He said to me.
I didn't say anything as I made my way towards the cushion and sat down.
"So, it's your first day of work. How do you feel? Be completely honest." He said as he took another sip.
"I...feel nervous because I don't think I can handle this kind of job. I mean, am I really qualified for this job?"
He chuckled as he placed the mug on the table, "Hold on. First of all, you don't really need any qualification for this job. As long as you do the job well. Secondly, it's not a difficult job, all you have to do is answer calls, take messages, organize my clients, arrange appointments and so on."
"In short, you can handle it. I believe you can." He added.
"Why do you trust me so much when you don't even know me well enough?" I questioned him.
"I don't trust you. I believe you. And with time, I believe I'll be able to trust you." He answered.
Hm, Okay then...
I stood, "Alright, is there anything you need me to do right now?"
"I just need you to sit back down and have some coffee." He said.
I shrugged and did just that.
After a while, I decided I was going to go sit at my desk or something.
"Remember, it's not hard. All you have to do, is take care of my schedule and lead people into my office after seeking my permission." He told me just before I stepped out.
I went over to a desk that wasn't too far from his office.
I got seated behind it and turned on the computer in front of me. For no reason at all.
Then I received a call from Amir.
"What's up now? Ina kike?(Where are you?)" He asked.
"I'm at my new job and I'll be leaving a little late so don't worry about me and just head home if you want. I'll take an Uber." I told him.
"Toh but remember you have a curfew oh. Don't stay out past your curfew." He cautioned before hanging up.
I looked through the drawers attached to the desk and I was met with so many empty drawers, but there was one that had something inside.
It was a folder.
It had some papers attached to it and I soon identified that it was a schedule folder.
Some of the pages were already occupied with previous schedules of different days. The rest of the pages were blank.
There wasn't much that happened after that.
I just received some calls and I managed to take record of his schedule for tomorrow.
I took care of everything before I decided it was time to go home.
I thought about saying goodbye to Mustapha but just decided against it and just made my exit.
I called an Uber and it came so I went home immediately.
As soon as I got home, I didn't even think about dinner. I just showered and did my prayers before resting my body on my bed.
My phone pinged just as I was about to turn off my bedside lamp.
It was a message from Mustapha.
Mustapha: Good job today, have a good night sleep and come to work energised tomorrow.
I simply smiled and replied in my head, 'Will do, boss.'
