A year later
According to Mustapha, he was engaged and for some reason, he invited me and Khalil to his engagement party.
How could we say no?
Khalil and Mustapha got along just fine now and I was happier than ever.
All my life, I've always felt...sort of obligated to make things right. To make everyone smile. I simply wanted the best for everyone.
My enemies, my frenemies and of course, my friends.
It's who I am.
Within these few months of being in a relationship with Khalil, I realized that I had changed a lot.
I was now open with everyone. In case no one noticed, I've always been the shy and antisocial type but it's like from the moment I stepped into this city, from the moment I entered university, my life took a quick turn.
And still, I never got carried away. I had everything in control, I had my life well thought out.
I had changed for the better.
And I like the new me.
"...and I now congratulate the newly engaged couple, Mustapha Sani and Mardiyyah Ahmad." Someone said and a round of applause came after that.
Pardon me for paying little to no attention to what the person had said before this.
Mind you, the event is quite boring.
I was actually playing candy crush on my phone at the moment.
"Sanu fah." I heard a deep voice say beside me.
I turned to Khalil with a smirk, "Please, you can't blame me. I'm bored."
"We can leave if you want." He suggested.
"Haba no, it's our friend's engagement party, we can't just leave. This is boring, yes, but we can only hope that the wedding would be fun." I said to him.
"Maybe." He shrugged.
Then Mustapha and his fianceé were called onto the stage for a couple's dance.
I watched with interest as they both danced happily. Good, at least he was happy.
It was a great sight, but of course, there's always that odd feeling you get when you see your ex so happy with another woman.
In my defense, I'm also happy with my current boyfriend.
Not that I'm only pointing out that fact in order to make myself feel better. Or maybe I am.
Just please, don't think about it too much. I'm fine, I promise.
"Are you okay- Oh, who am I kidding? I know you're not okay. You still like him. Don't worry, I'm not at all bothered." Khalil said.
I sighed, just appreciating his presence. His understanding. What would I do without him?
"I'm fine. I'm satisfied with you, Khalil. Mustapha is old news." I told him sincerely.
"I know you are, I trust you, Karimah. That's why I'm not bothered by this. I know you'll always do the right thing."
I hugged him at once.
He was so thoughtful, so caring...never jealous. He trusted me and I trusted him just as much.
See? We're just fine.
"Okay, I need some fresh air. Let's step out for a bit." I told him.
He nodded as he stood up and helped me up with him.
