The Fire Within

Chapter 4

Wolfpaw jumped on top of the vole, killing it quickly.  For two days, the plan had worked. Until Rockpaw and Socks started fighting. Other then that, perfect. She pulled the vole to her mother, who shared it with her. "I can't believe we've made it this far. I remember so much." Scarlet looked around and sighed. "How close are we?" Wolfpaw asked. "Very." Her mother replied, looking distance. "Are you alright?" Wolfpaw asked, worried for her mom.  Her mother snapped back to reality, "I'm fine, just... why don't we walk a little? Just you and me." Wolfpaw scanned the sky. The Sun was setting, making the sky pink. They had time.

"Alright. But we come right back." Scarlet laughed at her daughter. "We'll be fine." She started to walk, Wolfpaw skirting beside her. "Look at the sky." Scarlet said after a little walking,"Breath taking." Wolfpaw looked and felt amazed, "It's like the sky is a rainbow!" She watched it, then glanced to Scarlet to see her staring. "You look so much like him..." Scarlet licked her daughter. "You have his spirit too." Wolfpaw smiled and snuggled her mother. "I love you." Scarlet whispered, surprising Wolfpaw. "I do too Scar-" Scarlet suddenly froze, stopping Wolfpaw.

That's when she heard it. A growl, echoing in her ears. She turned and standing behind her was the biggest dog she had ever seen. It was lowered to some form of hunting crouch. It's mouth was open, showing Wolfpaw it's sharp teeth. Her mother pushed Wolfpaw back, that's when it attacked. Wolfpaw swung around to run. A sharp pain filled her body and she fell. The dog grabbed her and through her. She hit a tree. Wailed in pain. 

 In between gasps, she saw her mother, attacking with all her might. Scarlet backed up, but swiped, hitting the dog in the face. It whimpered, but it stood it's ground. As it started to regain it's sight, Scarlet pushed herself over to Wolfpaw. "Go with your brothers to Fireclan and get help, I'll get the dog away from you all. When i lose him, I'll meet you back at Fireclan. Wait for me. I love you all." She pushed herself against Wolfpaw, kissed her, then charged the dog again

The dog, confused, jumped at her. But she skirted his side and slashed it. It growled. She had it's attention. She glanced at Wolfpaw once more, before running away, dog following close behind.

Wolfpaw tried to rise and follow, but her belly pained her, and she fell. She blacked out.

"Let me see her!" The voice demanded

"If i let all of you see her, there won't be any room to help her!!" Another voice snapped back.

"Please, just let one of use in." A calm voice said.

"Fine. But he better not touch her yet. The webbing might fall off."

Wolfpaw slowly opened her eyes. Stonepaw looked down at her. "She's waking up!" he cried happily. "Let me see her." A cat pushed in-front of the excited Stonepaw. "My name is WhiteRose. I'll be taking care of you. My apprentice, Leafpaw, will come and help later." WhiteRose sat beside Wolfpaw, "What's your name. What happened." Wolfpaw glanced at Stonepaw, who nodded. "My name is Wolfpaw, and i was attacked by a dog."  Wolfpaw suddenly remembered. The dog. The teeth. Her mother.

She wailed, taking both cats in surprise. But when the tears came, Stonepaw pulled his sister close. She curled into a  ball, ignoring her chest pain. Stonepaw sighed then lay down beside her. "It...I couldn't... she might be dead!" Wolfpaw cried, pushing her face into his fur. "What are you... never mind. Get some rest now. I'll protect you." With his soothing words, Wolfpaw drifted to sleep.
