The Fire Within

Special: Rockpaw's Shadows part 2

Shout out to Saule, and all the fans of Clans of Fans!

"Rockkit! Come play with us!" Three happy kit faces stared at him. "Ok. But I want to be it first." He jumped over to his siblings. Wolfkit quickly swiped at Rockkit. "Then you are!!" She scampered away, Rockkit at her heals.

"Dovepaw? What are you doing here?" Rockpaw stared at her.

"I've come to rescue you." She growled at the other Sandstar, "You can't take him prisoner now!" SandStar was about to speak, when a voice called, "SandStar?!"

"Over here, TigerHeart." A large haired cat appeared from the tall grass.

"We smelled Fireclan cats and-" TigerHeart bristled when he saw Rockpaw and Dovepaw. His patrol spotted the two fireclan cats as well. A small, black and white cat stepped forward. "What are you doing here! This isn't your territory you mouse brain-"

"That's enough, Skypaw. They mean us no harm." SandStar looked sternly at the apprentice, who slunk back to his patrol. TigerHeart stood beside his leader, looking the two over. Rockpaw glanced over at Dovepaw. She looked super nervous. When he turned back, TigerHeart was in front of him. His yellow eyes seemed to pierce his soul. A shadow flickered on the corner of his eye. When he turned to look at it, he froze.

A giant animal stood before him. It's teeth glistened in an unseeable light. It was laughed at him.       

"Stop it!" he yelled at it. It laughed even louder. It smiled at Rockpaw, then disappeared. All around Rockpaw, darkness and shadows flickered. Dovepaw and the others were gone. He looked around wildly, trying to find an escape. He spotted a light. Hopeful, he started to run towards it.

But the shadows weren't done with him. The dog appeared again. Only, it was behind him. It's laugh echoed in Rockpaw's ears, making him run faster. But he wasn't going faster. The dog jumped and nipped his heals. Rockpaw tried to jump, but he fell. He fell down, down, down. The last thing he saw was the evil dog's grin, "Gotcha!"

"Are you alright?" Dovepaw stared down at Rockpaw. He looked around. How had he gotten here? Another cat stood nearby watching him. It disappear out of the den.

SandStar stepped in. "You gave us quite a scare there." Rockpaw looked around confused. He was laying in an old badger set. It smelled of herbs. The medicine den! What happened to me?!

Rockpaw stood up. "I'm not sure what happened, but I'm very sorry for trespassing." The older cat nodded.

"You two must be hungry. Please, grab some prey before you leave."

Rockpaw follow Sandstar out into camp. The camp was like a giant crater. The sides were easy to climb up and down, and the dirt was more like sand then earth. There were other holes like the badger set, but they looked cat made.

There was a slate of solid rock on the fair side of the camp. Right beside it was the fresh kill pile.

They headed towards the pile. Cats looked up curiously at them. But so few. Rockpaw noted. Dovepaw, who was walking beside him, seem to read his mind when she whispered, "Leaf-Bare was hard on them. I heard they warned the other clans that they had a strange disease. They told them to stay away from any contact with any of them. It sounded scary." Rockpaw nodded.

When they stopped at the pile, Rockpaw was surprised to see: "Fish?!" Sandstar chuckled.

"You really didn't think Mistclan was the only fish eating clan?" Rockpaw shook his head.

"Well, looks like you learn something every day."

"Sandstar!" Tigerheart hurried over to Sandstar. "It's Maplefox! Her kits are coming!" Sandstar looked over at a den in alarm. "Is she OK?" Tigerheart lowered his head, "I'm not sure. She's coughing and-" But Sandstar didn't let him finish. He pushed past him. Tigerheart sighed, then turned to Rockpaw and Dovepaw. "Grab something and eat. I'll take you back to fire clan when you're done." They did as they were told and started to eat. When ever Rockpaw looked up he could see Sandstar pacing in front of the nursery. "Is MapleFox his mate?" Rockpaw asked TigerHeart. Tigerheart shook his head, "No, MapleFox is his sister. Her mate died last leaf-bare."

"That's so sad."Dovepaw commented, "I hope she's ok."
"Me too..." Tigerheart watched his leader with a distant look. Rockpaw made sure to not look a his eyes, for fear of seeing the monster again. SandStar stopped pacing when a cat came out from the den. Joy spread to SandStar's face as the cat whispered to him, and he hurried inside.
"How many?" Tigerheart called to the cat.
"Three." It answered.
Wow. Rockpaw wondered what his mother felt when he was born. I wonder if Raven will kits someday.
