The Fire Within

Chapter 14

WolfClaw stared out at the forest. She could see Adderstep watching her, but he was quiet. Flamekit was showing her his battle moves. WolfClaw tried acting as focused as possible, but being glared at wasn't helping. Foresttail was still glaring at her, and Adderstep was waiting for... something. WolfClaw glanced over at Stormcloud, who was coming to her. "Do you want to come hunt? I'm grabbing cats for a patrol." She nodded and was going to follow when she heard another voice.

"I'd like to come, but i'd like to borrow WolfClaw for a moment." Adderstep towered over the cats and WolfClaw felt like a kit all over again. Stormcloud hesitated, and glanced at her. "I'll be fine." She assured him.

Adderstep lead her to a remote spot where WolfClaw was sure no one would hear. He was very quiet with his paw steps, and he keeped glancing at the slightest of noise. Adderstep didn't start talking till they were a good distance from the camp.

"I've come to confess, and warn you, WolfClaw." She pulled her ears back. This wasn't the usual Adderstep! "Some moons ago, I wanted to control the clan. I wanted to become leader of Fireclan. A cat came to me. He was... different. He talked of a future I controlled! It sounded so great at the time. Till Mintleaf. We had planed to kill MorningWing, but he changed his mind. He went after my mate, and killed her." Adderstep's eyes were still filled with grief. WolfClaw saw now that he had changed, for the better. Mintleaf would have been proud.

"I was so angry! I wanted to gut him till his spirit bagged for mercy! But when I went to our meeting place, there was someone new. He told me I had to go and attack some Mistclan cats, then some Cloudclan cats. But I refused. The rouge warned me I was leaving the deal if I refused. But I was done." Adderstep jumped as a bird took off some place. He seemed so nervous. "Who is attacking the clans." She demanded. Adderstep shook his head, "To be truthful, even I don't know. He is crazy, even a kit could see that. His first destitution is to kill, then ask questions. His laugh is like claws on stone. But I know two things. There is a Dark forest cat influencing him. The cat is hiding his scent so you can't tell who he is. It can make him smell like anyone, or any clan. He will kill, and you're next on his list!"

A Dark Forest cat? Weren't they the evil cats that hate the clans? WolfClaw felt a shivered at the thought. She had a lunatic on her paws. Who would stop him?

A kit squeak echoed through the forest. Adderstep spun around. A small kit was wondering in the distance. WolfClaw called out to the kit, but Adderstep just stared. He was frozen in place, staring at the kit. But WolfClaw could hear him clearly when he whispered a name she know he missed dearly.

"Mintleaf..."
