"I'd like to spend an hour or two just sitting down to talk with you, But since I can't be with you, my friend, I'll kiss the screen when I hit send!"

To Madison,  though we have never stood face to face, you still make me laugh and smile.

~Past~

DeadBark walked along the stream near the camp. He could hear the birds, but paid no mind to them.

It is a quiet day, he thought, too quiet.

He stopped at the stream bend to wait for the fish. He was careful not to let his shadow fall onto the water's surface, which would scare them away. But he let his paw hover over the surface.

One fish started to creep closer to the edge, as if unsure what to do with it's life.

DeadBark waited patiently as it swam away, only to come back with two or three more. They swam closer and closer, and he stood still and waited and waited.

Then his paw splashed into the water. The other fish scattered, but the one under his paw flew up into the air as he pushed it into the water and onto land. Then using his claws, he pounced onto the fish to stop it from jumping back in.

"YES-Oops!" A voice yelled.

DeadBark looked up, unsure who was there. A rustle of leaves from a bush nearby told him everything.

"I know it's you. Come on out."

A black and white she-cat emerged from the leaves giggling.

"How did you know?"

"Well..." DeadBark smiled and walked to her, "The only cat that would try to scare me would be my Shadowclaw. Also, you tried it last night."

He licked her nose.

She smiled and leaned into him. They sat there by the stream in silence, the fish ignored and forgotten.

It was ShadowClaw to break the silence.

"Who were you before."

"Come again?"

"You weren't here when I was a kit. And then one day, you just showed up."

"Well I... It's hard to explain."

"Why?"

"Because I don't remember all of it."

~Present~

DeadBark glance at the nursery, debating if he should go to ShadowClaw now.

No, He thought, She will learn soon. If what I remember is as horrific as it was, then I won't let her till I know for certain she will be safe.

He turned towards SilverStar who was waiting patiently for him.

"Where."

"Tell me first why they would say that."

"Why should I do that?"

"Because you have kept too many secrets from this clan. Why do you never look out at our northern border? Why do you refuse to explain the scars on your tail? Why do you have kin when you came here alone?"

"SilverStar." DeadBark growled, glancing around. They still stood in the camp, and he didn't like that SilverStar spoke of those things out loud.

He hurried past him and onto the hill going down to the stream, coming face to face with the very loner,

that claimed him as kin.
