"Tell me a bed time story!" The little girl yelled as she jumped on your bed. You laughed.

"Ok, Penny. I'll tell you a bed time story if you lay down." You compromised.

She instantly dropped to the bed and climbed under the covers.

You tucked in her feet, tickling them, and she giggled. You climbed into bed beside her and asked,

"Ok, what story do you want today?"

"The prince and the princess. The sad one." She said in a small voice.

You breathe caught for a moment. Only a moment, before you shook your head.

"The sad one? Are you sure?" You asked, trying to ignore the tightness in your chest.

She nodded vigorously, so you took a deep breathe and started.

"Once upon a time, there was a prince and a princess. They were so in love, that every time they looked at each other, sparks flew. And every time they kissed, an Angel got their wings." You said, ignoring the lump in my throat. You told a lovely tale of the prince and the princess, how they would sit and watched the stars. But of course, it had to come to an end.

"They thought they were going to be together forever." You said, watching as your daughters eyes widened.

"This is when it gets sad." She said, bringing the covers up to her eyes.

You nodded slowly.

Before you could finish the story, there was a knock on the door.

"Who could it be?" You asked out loud, making an exaggerated sigh, smiling at your daughters giggles.

"Maybe it's the mailman, coming to wish you a happy birthday." You whispered.

Penny gasped and you smiled.

She held out her hand.

"I'm four now!" She yelled waving her hand around. You laughed and kissed her palm.

"You're such a big girl now." You said.

"I'm going to see who's here ok?"

You turned to leave your room, when Penny jumped up.

"Take me with you mommy! Please! I want to see the mailman!" She yelled reaching her arms out towards you.

You chuckled and picked her up, setting her on your hip as you walked to the front door.

"It's probably not the mailman Penny." You said glancing at the living room clock that read 8 p.m.

"Why not mommy?" She asked sweetly.

You grabbed the door handle and pulled as you answered.

"It's too late, Penny. No one comes this-"

You stopped as saw who was at the door.

"Mommy?" Penny asked, poking your shoulder. "Mommy what's wrong?"

You just stood there, your eyes wide. Penny started getting upset, poking your cheek.

Snapping out of your stupor, you turned your head to her.

"Yes baby?" You voice was tight.

"What's wrong?" Her daughter asked.

"Oh, nothing baby. I'm just....." You turned back towards the door. You opened it again, saying those three words you thought you'd never say.

"Come in, Dean."
