WHEN THEY'D ARRIVED AT CLOUDCROFT, New Mexico snow covered every inch of possible ground. Even with the gifted Lion-skin coat, Nicoletta was still freezing. She took a glance at Percy, whose jacket was ripped and torn in every direction, and immediately felt sorry.

Percy didn't, though. He was determined to get her to like him. Even if he had to sacrifice warmth and embrace frosty fingers.

In the end, she gave him the jacket after seeing his ears turn blue. He tried to protest but she just thrusted the Lion's coat over his head which caused him to trip over himself.

Apparently, after their conversation, Nicoletta had drifted off into a dreamless sleep ( one she was grateful for ) and Percy had an odd conversation with the Sun God, Apollo, in the form of Fred the homeless guy. He had told him to seek Nereus out in San Francisco, the place Annabeth had lived.

Grover looked uneasy. "That's good, I guess. But we've got to get there first."

Nicoletta tried not to get too depressed about their chances, yet everyone could see it on her face. Her lips drooped into a minuscule pout and her eyes grew weary, still glowing of her mother's blessing, but with burning embers in a last effort to keep the flame alive. She had started to feel useless, the one exception in this quest, and began to wish that she had never come in the first place.

Percy could see her distress, after all the time he had been looking at her to make sure she wasn't rolling her eyes at something he had said, or mocking him, he could tell that she was out of it. Her skin was flushed and her hair looked limp.

"You know, when you sleep your nose scrunches up," He replicated her button nose, eyebrows furrowed in concentration as he tried to recreate it. "Like this."

Nicoletta felt her eyelashes flutter at his action. Heart pounding at the notion of him watching her sleep, hoping she hadn't said something dumb whilst resting. "You have drool on your chin. Right there."

He blushed and turned away. Licking his thumb to remove the dried drool.

They stopped in the middle of town. You could pretty much see everything from there: a school, a bunch of tourist stores and cafes, some ski cabins, and a grocery store.

"Great," Thalia said, ignoring the two and looking around. "No bus station. No taxis. No car rental. No way out."

"There's a coffee shop!" said Grover.

"Yes," Zoe said. "Coffee is good."

"And pastries," Grover said dreamily. "And wax paper."
