WHEN PERCY JACKSON WRESTLED A HOMELESS GUY NICOLETTA WAS SURE SHE HAD SEEN IT ALL. His pet, the Ophiotaurus ( Bessie for short ) had basically led them into a trap, one with two different colored eyes that sent shivers down her back in a punctured reaction.
"This is just pairrr-fect," the manticore gloated.
Percy stood from the pier where he was sitting, his eyes wide with alarm which made Nicoletta even more nervous. She glanced at the monster. He was wearing a ratty black trench coat over this uniform of his, it was torn and stained. The terrible matching of clothing sent Nicoletta into a brain fuzz, making her realize that this manticore was the same one at the Smithsonian.
"Long ago, the gods banished me to Persia," the manticore said. "I was forced to scrounge for food on the edges of the world, hiding in forests, devouring insignificant human farmers for my meals. I never got to fight any great heroes. I was not feared and admired in the old stories! But now that will change. The Titans shall honor me, and I shall feast on the flesh of half-bloods!"
"Spare us the sob story," Nicoletta dusted the dirt off of her, completely over the revenge/character arc/villain origin story from monsters. She just wanted to take a shower. "Where are the skeletons?"
He sneered. "I do not need those foolish undead! The General thinks I am worthless? He will change his mind when I defeat you all myself!" His french accent rolled off his tongue.
"Go choke on a baguette," Nicoletta replied in his native language, fishing Little Angel out of her pocket.
"We beat you once before," Percy uncapped Riptide, a challenge-like expression bared as he raised his right eyebrow. "Or did you forget?"
"Ha! You could barely fight me with a goddess on your side. And, alas... that goddess is preoccupied at the moment. There will be no help for you now."
Zoe notched an arrow and aimed it straight at the manticore's head. The guards on either side of her raised their guns.
"Wait!" Percy yelped. "Zoe, don't!"
The manticore smiled. "The boy is right, Zoe Nightshade. Put away your bow. It would be a shame to kill you before you witnessed Thalia's great victory."
Right as Amara's death dagger was transformed Nicoletta glanced at the mirror-like blade. Her face reflected confusion as she saw Thalia in the background shifting on her feet with an uncertain look on.
"What are you talking about?" Thalia growled. She had her shield and spear ready.
"Surely it is clear," the manticore said. "This is your moment. This is why Lord Kronos brought you back to life. You will sacrifice the Ophiotaurus. You will bring its entrails to the sacred fire on the mountain. You will gain unlimited power. And for your sixteenth birthday, you will overthrow Olympus."
