BIANCA'S DEATH WAS PAINFUL, but nothing was as painfully staking as sitting in a boat with Percy Jackson and Zoe Nightshade. The tension was thicker than the fresh tears in Zoe's eyes whenever she thought of Bianca, but the icing on the cake was that the two people she despised the most were trapped afloat with her.

She looked like she wanted to strangle Nicoletta. Then toss her off the boat.

Which wouldn't be pleasant, seeing as there were naiads eyeing Nicoletta, probably wanting to finish the job off for Zoe. The envious looks on their drowned-out faces were obvious, but the fact that Zoe loathed her, even more, struck her.

Nicoletta figured that she probably blamed her for Bianca's death. She had just sat around, while Bianca sacrificed herself for the quest, Artemis, for Annabeth, for them. Her emotions got the best of her, and with no context, ruined her. Well, trust me, Zoe. I blame myself already.

"I hate naiads," Zoe grumbled.

A stream of fresh water squirted her in the face, and for extra measure, drenched Nicoletta from head to toe, just for fun.

Nicoletta blanched, spitting the water out of her mouth and wiping her eyes vigorously. A chill rocked her core at the new contact with water, glaring down at the water naiads while freezing.

"She-devils!" Zoe went for her bow.

"Whoa," Percy said, eyes wide. "They're just playing."

Nicoletta huffed, wringing her hair out. "I don't see you fr-freezing."

"Huh? Wait, oh. . . ."

Percy reached over the boat, drying her with a touch of his hand. She liked to think that the chills left on her arms were remaining efforts from the cold, not his fingers on her skin.

"Gods, thanks." Nicoletta let a breath out. Icy blue lips would not go well with her complexion, at all.

"Cursed water spirits. They've never forgiven me." Zoe said after a while, flicking pebbles from inside the boat down at the naiads. Watching as some went deeper underwater to avoid being hit.

"Forgiven you for what?" Percy peered at her, eyebrows furrowed.

She slung her bow back over her shoulder. "It was a long time ago. Never mind."

They sped up the river, the cliffs looming up on either side of them, providing shade in frosty weather.

"What happened to Bianca wasn't your fault," Percy told her. "It was my fault. I let her go."
