Chapter 36: The Return Journey

As the portal closes inside the dark, damp cave. The sudden sound of crumbling stone stirs Ruby awake. Opening her eyes, she sees Falke cutting the Hell gate in two, severing the connection to hell. At first, her mind races with thoughts of sadness, fear, and finally, anger. But her mind stops as she also sees her uncle patting Falke on the back. This confuses her as she knows someone is currently carrying her. Looking up, her eyes lock with an older woman, younger than her uncle. She looks like a carbon copy of her but just a tad bit older.

Ruby: Confused, she asks weakly. "W-who are y-you?"

Summer: "Oh. My little cookie monster, it's me, mommy." She says, looking down at Ruby with the same silver eyes that Ruby does.

Ruby's eyes begin to water as she doesn't even have the word even to come close to conveying the emotions that she is feeling. But she instead buries her face into her mother's chest as she begins to cry.

Ruby: "*sobbing* I m-m-missed y-y-you s-so m-m-m-much!" Her voice was hiccupping as she had trouble speaking from her crying.

Summer can only hold her child as she too has missed Ruby more than anyone else in the world. Qrow and Falke both watch as Summer and Ruby sob, letting all their emotions that had been building since Summer had disappeared, out all at once.

Qrow: "*Whispering* I think we should leave them to do their thing."

Falke: "*Whispering* Good call." They begin to walk out of the cavern but are stopped by Summer calling to them both.

Summer: "And where do you two think you are going? You're not getting out of this hug. Now get in here." Holding out her hand, gesturing for the two of them to join in the hug.

Falke: "Hey. I'm not gonna turn down a free hug." Kneeling as he joins in on the hug.

Qrow: "Ah. What the hell." He, too joining in on the hug.

Vergil(mental): "Why are you doing this? Shouldn't we be getting back?"

Falke(mental): "Shhh. You're a part of this now." An audible groan from Vergil could be heard in Falke's mind.

Vergil: Summoning himself. "Alright. Enough of this. We have to get back to Shade Academy. We don't know how long we've been gone."

Qrow: "Geez, calm down, Mr. grumpy pants. We were only in there for at least a couple hours, at most."

Falke: "Yeah, about that, it turns out time moves slower in the Underworld. So slow that Summer has only aged about 3 to 4 weeks."

Qrow: Breaking the hug. "Wait! Really! Hah, that means I'm not the youngest anymore."

Falke: Also breaking the hug. "The fact that 'THAT' was the most important thing you drew from that does tell me you're my father." Qrow, letting out a slight chuckle.

Summer: Still holding onto Ruby. "Ruby? There's someone special I'd like you to meet." Both Falke and Qrow turn around in surprise.

Ruby: "Mhmm?"

Summer: "Ruby, this is Qrow Branwen. He's your father. Your real father."

Qrow's breath leaves his body, this technically happened already, and he thought he'd be able to handle the news a second time. But as before, Falke quickly moves to catch his father as he falls to one knee. But unlike before this time, it was much more impactful. He didn't know how Ruby would react. Would she hate him for never owning up to being her father? Would she not want anything to do with him? Thoughts like these raced through his head as he barely could feel the small arms of Ruby wrap around his chest.

Ruby: "*Whispering* I knew it." 

Qrow: "H-how long?"

Ruby: "Silly dad. I always knew. I just knew you were scared, is all."

Qrow didn't know what to say, but all he could do was hug Ruby as tightly as he could and close his eyes, and hope that when he opened them, this wasn't all just a dream.

Falke: "*Sniffling* I, uh, think it's time we go."

They all begin to walk out of the cave, slay more Grimm but eventually make it outside. To their surprise, they see Ky's ship still here, under a tarp but still here.

Falke: "Ky!? You not dead?" Stooping as he hears a crash coming from inside the ship, Ky popping out of the bay door with a small beard and longer hair.

Ky: "1 Day. That's what you said. 'Oh. we won't be gone for more than a day.' It's been a week and a half! You know what I had to do to survive out here?! I had to eat something I'm pretty sure wasn't edible by any form of standards!" Stomping up to Falke, still enraged, he immediately spots Summer and stops. "I oughta-Oh hey, names Ky Summers, daring pilot, a survivor of the Vacuo waste. Who might you be, beautiful?"

Qrow: Seeing where this was going. "Okay, flyboy, time for you to do your job and fly us home." Pushing him back onto the ship as they begin their flight back to Shade Academy.

A couple of hours later, at Shade Academy.

Pyrrha: Barging into Team RWBY's dorm. "Falke just called. They're almost back!" Surprising, Yang, Weiss, Blake, and Nero were there 'hanging out' with Blake.

Yang: "Woah! Did he say how far out?"

Pyrrha: "They're only 10 minutes away, and they're landing at the east landing pad. Come on." Rushing down the hall as the others follow.

As they reach the east landing pad, they are greeted by Headmaster Theodore, Counselor V with Griffon, and Xanthe Rumpole, Theodore's right-hand woman. They all watch as Ky's ship lands. They can all tell it has seen better days as the extended time exposed to the harsh elements has marked the ship with slight rust damage. Ky hopping out of the ship, he lowers the bay door as Falke, and the others begin to walk out.

Theodore: "Ky Summers! Not only have you broken the law twice, but now you do it a third time and expect me to...to...by the gods, Summer?"

Everyone, excluding V, is left speechless as standing before them is none other than Summer Rose. Who they had all thought been dead for the past 18 years.

Summer: "Hiya, Theodore. I see you finally bulked up a bit since I last saw you."

Theodore: "I...I-uh...*fake cough* and you haven't aged a day."

V: "Hm, interesting."

Rumpole: "You make it sound as though you knew all along."

V: Eyeing Falke. "Merely a working theory. Proven right, obviously."

Rumpole: "Everyone back to their dorms, immediately. Once the...situation has been handled, your team members will be sent back to you." The two teams were groaning in protest as they trudged back towards their dorms.

Theodore: "Ms. Rose, Qrow, if you'd please follow me. I think it is understandably necessary that we learn how you managed to survive for so long. Counselor V, I leave the fate of these two to your discretion." Summer and Qrow were waving as they and Ky followed Theodore and Rumpole into the main building.

Griffon: "Hahahaha, you two are in deep trouble." He says as he flies around the two half-siblings.

V: "Enough, Griffon." Griffon silencing. "Now tell me. Is Mundus still alive?"
