Marshall POV
I only have a dozen pills left and then I'm going to stop! I did what Liz suggested and went home last night to go straight to bed.
I woke up not feeling quite as bad as usual and showered and shaved. Of course, I was still going to get high today, but I was going to space it out so I wouldn't be so messed up when I hung out with Liz later. I placed my chain bracelet upon my wrist and a gold chain around my neck. I wanted to make a good impression on her today, so I only took two pills to start the day instead of five. I was getting excited because I got the feeling that this chick could be a good influence on me.
Liz POV
I tried calling Logan last night right after I got off the phone with Marshall and twice this morning, but he never answered. I have my own key to the safe house, but that's only for when Logan has an assignment for me. I'm not allowed to just show up there to hang out, but I was going to take the risk.
I pinned my burgundy hair in place, covered my face in thick makeup and my lips shined red. I settled for a simple pair of ripped up jeans and a hoodie along with my pair Converse. It wasn't that kind of night to wear my stilettos. I felt like tonight was more getting together as friends, not a night for doing business. I had to admit, I was a bit nervous. I didn't mean to genuinely form a friendship with Marshall Mathers, but it seems as though he likes me. Or at least the confidant woman I pretend to be.
I tried calling Logan once more to no avail, so I simply texted...
Liz: I'm sorry, but I'm going to need the apartment later to see Marshall. Please don't show up!
Liz: I'm just going to talk to him, ya know, win him over! So, we'll need some privacy.
I had no idea what I would find if I just showed up unannounced to the safe house. Anybody who Logan fucked with could potentially be there, I know he has more girls that work for him besides me. Some do fraud, some sell drugs, and some do what I do which is take advantage of rich, unsuspecting men.
~~
I got to the apartment early while it was still light out and it felt like my palms were dripping in nervous perspiration. I moved some things around to make it look like I actually lived here. I dirtied some dishes and put them in the sink, then threw some clothing into the hamper. Hopefully, Marshall wouldn't notice that they were men's clothes.
Let me in your world tonight, fill me with your thoughts,
Relax me, please me, make me laugh and hope we don't get caught
I'll allow you in my mind, I'll let you in my soul
I can make your dreams come true before I take control
Goddess knows that this can't be, the future's in the cards
Might have to use some voodoo magic, infatuation will die hard.
I laid my pen on the table and sat back to take a deep breath, knees shaking in anxiousness. Soon enough, Marshall text me that he was on his way, and I paced around the room with another wave of nerves.
In a way, I hoped he wouldn't like me after tonight and wanted nothing more to do with me. What was I supposed to tell him? I'm actually a con-woman and this whole thing started because my partner in crime had been watching you and sent me to do the deed?
~~~
Marshall pounded on the door earlier than I was expecting at only half past six.
"Hey," He pushed his way past me.
He seemed a bit different, his eyes weren't quite as cloudy tonight.
"I'm starving. Watchu got to eat in this joint?"
"Well hello to you too." I shut and locked the door. "I told you, I don't cook much. I like to order in. You wanna go get something to eat?"
I hoped he would accept my invitation so we could get out of this uncomfortable position I had gotten myself into.
"Nah, let's just order something." He collapsed onto the couch. "C'mere."
Marshall extended his arms and I bent down to reciprocate a hug.
"You look nice tonight." He told me and suddenly I felt heat throughout my body.
"You look good too."
He gave a half-smile and took out his phone, "I'll order something, what's good around here?"
"Uh, there's a Chinese place on the corner."
"Cool." Marshall browsed his phone for a moment and started to dial the number.
"Beef and broccoli." I whispered. "I'll be right back."
I excused myself to the bathroom and texted Logan once more.
Liz: I'm at the apartment now! It's not gonna work out. Please stay away! I need time to work my magic!
Luckily, Logan must have been busy because I hadn't heard from him all day, so I took that as a good sign and then rejoined Marshall in the sitting room.
"They said fifteen minutes." Marshall told me.
"Good, I'm pretty hungry too." I nervously ran my fingers through my hair.
"So, what'd you do today?"
"Oh, um...I painted a little in the morning and then caught up on some laundry a bit."
"If you're such an artist, where's all your work?"
"What?" I didn't understand the question.
"Where's all your stuff, I mean, this place looks bare." He acknowledged the blank walls and the overall hollow feeling of the safe house.
I paused in a blank stare. I didn't know what to say but was saved by the bell with the deliveryman at the door.
Marshall handed me a $50, "Tell him to keep the change." He said before setting his wallet down on the coffee table next to his phone.
I made the exchange with the deliveryman, and he gratefully accepted the generous tip.
Marshall and I dug into our food, and he brought up another question I didn't want to answer.
"So, if you don't have a job right now, what do you do all day? Do you have family? Friends?" He pried. "What's your story?"
I took a deep uneasy breath, "That's a lot of questions."
"I poured my heart out to you the other night! Tell me something I don't know about you." He looked me over.
I figured it couldn't hurt to tell him a bit about myself, "You and I have a lot in common. I had a friend who passed away also. My best friend died two years ago."
We were interrupted when my phone beeped with a text from Logan, and I looked down to read it.
Logan: You've had enough time. I'll be there in a little. Be ready!
