Chapter 27

"And you're saying this...relic, held some kind of hilt in it?" Seraph asked.

"Yes, but it soon disappeared after I pulled myself free." Devon replied.

"After it fell silent."

"Yes sir."

"I see. I'll have some of my analysts take a look at it. If it is magical in nature, they'll be the first to find out."

"Is that all sir?"

"You are dismissed." Seraph waved him off as he examined the orb.

Devon paused at the door. "Sir, if I may."

"Go on."

"Whoever looks over that thing, make sure they're careful. I felt like I was living the deaths of thousands when my hands were sucked in. It wasn't pleasant."

"I will let them know, you are dismissed."

"Thank you sir."

      The door closed behind Devon and Doctor Seraph stood up from his desk. He walked around his office, studying the orb from every angle.

"Hmm...the shape is nearly perfect. No visible indentations, surface is abnormally smooth." He muttered to himself. He tapped a button on the underside of his desk and a door appeared in the wall to his right.

    It retracted and he entered another, larger room. Inside, another hooded figure sat cross legged at its center in meditation.

"I have need of your services." Seraph said. "And I do not want to wait for you to finish your...whatever it is you are doing."

    The figure only slightly acknowledged him before they floated to their feet. They turned to him with their hands together in a sort of praying gesture. Doctor Seraph motioned for them to enter his office and the door closed behind them.

Devon walked out of the shower drying his hair wearing slacks and a simple t-shirt. Lukas was sitting next to Rose, looking over a report while Eune and Alyssa were in the forge with Hephaestus.

"Your report was weird man." Lukas groaned. "You must be going crazy."

"And I told you what happened after I touched the damn thing." Devon sighed. "Five times on the way here and six more after we arrived."

"You should lay off him a bit Lukas." Rose said. "The same probably would have happened to any of us."

"Yeah yeah." Lukas fell back onto his bunk.

"I'm serious man! You go touch that thing."

"Whatever it is no longer concerns us." Rose said. "Let's just focus on the future."

"Hell yeah! You saw what she did! That's gonna be one hell of an upgrade." Alyssa cheered as she and Eune entered the room.

"What'd you have Hephaestus even do?" Devon asked.

"That...will be reserved for our next mission." She grinned. "I ain't gonna share until I can show off."

"She had Hephaestus upgrade her weapons to better adhere to here abilities." Eune chimed in.

"Hey!"

"Better adhere? What kind of world are you livin' in huh? Your weapons ain't gonna do jack." Lukas said.

"I swear I'll beat that shit eating grin off your stupid face ya fair sack of the sav!"

"What does that even mean?"
