Chapter 20

Diane 18 and the boys 19

It was the summer. Bucky Steve and I were at the beach.
I had my favorite swimsuit on, a cute sun hat, and sunglasses. Bucky was wearing some pants but no shirt. And Steve kept himself fully clothed in a normal outfit.
Steve went to get snacks as Bucky and I were sat down on a big towel with my radio playing some music. I was laying down holding my book over my face when Bucky said
"You're going to have that book sunburned to your face"
Without even looking at him I adjust my sunglasses and say
"Well what do you suggest I do instead"
"Swim, socialize, find better music"
I sit up and scoff
"How dare you. This is my favorite radio station"

"Ha I go your head out of that book"
He says slipping the book out of my hands and sticking the bookmark in it
"You suck" I scoff
"You love it" he winks
I roll my eyes

"I'll give you 5 cents to go talk to that lifeguard over there"
Bucky says pointing
"No way buck. He's surrounded by girls."
"10 cents"
"Absolutely not."
"20 cents"
I groan. I could do well with 20 cents
I take a good look at the guy then shake my head
"I would take that any other time if it wasn't on a beach with me in a very revealing swim outfit"

Bucky sighs wiping sand off our towel
"You are no fun Dee-Dee"
"Don't care"
I shrug and smile when I see Steve coming back with snacks
"You are my lifesaver I thought I was going to pass out from hunger"
I say to Steve
"You're very welcome."
He says with a smile

"Dee is very boring today"
Bucky says to Steve. I scoff
"Why"
Steve asks taking some candy and eating it
"She doesn't want to do anything but read."
"You two always sound like a married couple"
Steve says
"I'd rather marry you Steve, then marry Bucky"
"Rude"
Bucky says sounding truly offended
"I would also rather marrying you then marry buck"
Steve jokes making me laugh
"Haha Steve's got jokes"
Bucky dryly says
"Don't be so bitter buck."
I say throwing a small bit of sand at him

His eyes go wide
"Uh oh"
Steve says, unbothered eating another piece of candy.

I get up and so does buck with a handful of sand
"Hey that's way more then I threw!"
I whine
Then he starts chasing me with sand. Once I lose him I go back and sit with Steve

"You seem bored"
I say softly to him when I've caught my breathe and he shrugs
"I'm not.. the biggest fan of beaches"
I wrap my arms around him
"Well I'm glad you came with us"
He smiles

I lay my head in Steve lap, he was wearing my hat,  and I had  gotten out my book and read again. It had seemed like we lost Bucky, he had been gone for about 10 minutes before Steve noticed he found a girl.. friend

"Why am I not surprised"
Steve sighs
"I'm sorry dee"

Steve had known about my crush on Bucky for about a year now. He always felt bad for me when Bucky was with another girl. I tried to let it not get to me though.

"Oh it's alright."
I say with a slight smile

I sit up and look at him
"Wanna go swim?"
Steve looks ahead to the water
"What if we made a sand castle"
I gasp
"Great idea"

I gather shells while Steve starts to build the castle. We both can't stop laughing when our castle looks pathetic as ever.
But soon we get a small.. good castle. I place some shells on it and make some indents and clap
"We did great"
We clap our sandy hands together
"The best"
Steve saying smile at me

Then he writes with his finger in the sand
D + S = t h e  b e s t  t e a m

I giggle
"Perfect"

Bucky walks over to Steve now adding a moat to our sand castle
"What is this"
"Our sand castle"
I say wiping sand off my cheek with the back of my hand
"Isn't it great"

Bucky shrugs then sits down next to me
"Don't mess anything up would you"
I command as he almost demolished a side of the castle

Steve officially finished the castle and Bucky ended up leaving for us being "too lame". We had a lot of fun that day. Bucky on the other hand, not so much.
