Y/n was completely wiped out.
she had been working almost everyday, with twelve hour shifts and barely an hour left for a break. but she was nearing the end of her shift, then she wouldn't have to come back for three days.
Darryl had also insisted on staying during night shifts now. the day after she spoke with Artem he came into work, pale faced and sweating. he announced that he would be editing the schedule, and that he would be hiring more people.
however he did raise the prices of some of the drinks. which made some of the customers angry.
he would come in twice as early to make sure everything was properly put together, and then he would actually... greet her.
"y/n?"
his voice shook slightly when he said her name.
"hm?"
y/n wiped the tap of the steamer off and placed it back into the new cup of water. she puffed out a few steams, wiped it one more time and then turned to her boss.
"would you be interested in becoming the second manager?" he asked timidly.
he would no longer look at her. she couldn't understand why. its not like she had done anything wrong, or anything to warrant him looking so scared.
"i don't think so. its a lot of responsibility."
that was the truth. she enjoyed her job now, and with the pay increase things had just gotten all the more sweeter for her. she would work her ass off for two weeks, then she could take the rest of the month off. it was her favorite.
darryl couldn't say anything either, he broke multiple labor laws, and Y/n was certain she had seen some of the local mobs goons in the back room with him. she wasnt supposed to see them, obviously, but they were all playing poker in the managers office like friends. all she had to do was lie about having evidence, and she got her schedule.
of course blackmail is a crime, but having the police sniffing around your doorstep because of suspicious connections? even more of a hassle than people realized.
"are you sure? there's a decent pay raise!" he said.
y/n set down the cloth and opened up the mini fridge, checking to be sure that there was enough milk inside of it. she counted over the jugs, then over the whip cream and cold foam cans.
"yes im sure. i mean id like a pay raise now since i don't make very much for the amount of work i do, but i don't want to shoulder more responsibilities." Y/n sighed.
"p-pay raise? you want that? i can do that without promoting you!"
y/n turned to look at him, her eyebrows coming together in concern. Darryle wasnt mean. not exactly. he only did things that would benefit him. so when he would suggest helping y/n without asking for something in return, it baffled her.
"im sorry what?"
"you do plenty around here, and i want to keep you around. so if a pay raise is enough to satisfy you, name your price!"
he brought out his phone, trying in a few numbers before looking at me expectantly.
Y/ns phone buzzed in that moment. she held up a hand to tell Darryle to wait. even now she could hardly believe her ears and eyes. there was nothing darryl did without a price.
she looked at the message.
an unknown number.
she swiped to the side and her cheeks immediately heated up.
