The car pulled to a stop in front of the university gate. The sun cast through over the gargoyles guarding the archway, shining down on the sidewalk.
Joey opened the car door, stepping into the warm day, pulling her backpack onto her shoulder.
"Please be safe, and don't stay up partying, you hear me?" Her mother begged, rolling down her car window. Joey turned, seeing genuine fear in her eyes, Joey grabbed her mother's hand through the window.
"I'll be fine mom, I'm ready for this." Her mother squeezed her hand, sighing.
"You better be ready for this," her father grumbled from the driver's seat. "Only took you a year to actually apply to university," Joey sighed, removing her hand from her moms, walking around the back of the car and grabbing her suitcase from the trunk. After shutting it, she leaned down to peer into the window.
"I love you guys, I promise I'll call and write letters telling you how it's going."
"We're so proud of you, honey. And remember to check in with Abigail when you get set up with your classes." Her mother smiled brightly, tears misting her eyes. She turned to her husband, nudging his shoulder.
"Do your best, Joey," He tried to mask the sadness in his voice, Joey smiled at her parents and watched them drive down the road. She sighed, picking up her suitcase and turning back towards the university.
"Here we go," she mumbled to herself, walking through the front gate. Monsters of all shapes and sizes were laughing and running all around her.
Despite the warm sun, there was a cool breeze to the September air, her wings shivered slightly. She found the registration table and got her bags sent to her room and her ID printed out. Close to the dorm buildings were the clubs tables, she wandered around looking for her old friend, he said he would meet her soon, unfortunately he never said when and where.
She walked through all the tables, not seeing any that piqued her interest, until she passed a blue booth with an over energetic purple bird and quiet girl with gray skin and buck teeth.
"MU's Greek Council, we sponsore the annual scare games!" At the mention of her Aunts games, Joey turned, picking up a poster as the bird man started yelling.
"Now YOU look like a monster that would do well in the Scare Games! You should consider joining a sorority!" Joey laughed at his enthusiasm, the girl started speaking.
"Or...if competing isn't your thing you could join the council and help with setting up the games." Joey smiled, looking over the poster, she had wanted to compete in the games, but if people found out her Aunt made them, they would put her on a pedestal.
"Sure, yeah. That sounds really fun actually!"
"Sigh here then," she handed Joey a clip board with a blue pen and paper. She put her name, phone number, and email before handing the clip board back. They eagerly looked to see who was joining them.
"Glad to have you join us, Josephine. I'm Claire, and this is Brock, president and vice president of the Greek Council."
"It's nice to meet you guys, also please call me Joey," Brock extended his hand and she shook it, he had a very strong handshake.
"We will text or email you when we have our official first meeting," Brock said, Joey nodded, continuing down the rows of clubs, she waved goodbye.
At the end of the tables we're a large field with small cobblestone paths leading to several large buildings, there were a few trees scattered about and some picnick tables where students were sitting and chatting.
"Well, well, well, look who finally decided to show up," Joey smiled recognizing the voice behind her, she turned seeing Javier standing a few feet away from her. His top arms were crossed and the bottom two were playfully on his hips.
"Hey, Javi. It's good to see you buddy." She smiled brightly, taking a step closer to him and hugging him tightly. He hugged back, pulling back he noticed the Scare Games poster.
"You know, those are much more impressive than what the poster says," they shared a laugh, walking on one of the paths through the campus.
"I sure hope so, or else I signed up for the wrong club."
"You're joining the Greek Council?"
"Yeah, it seemed like fun, getting to be behind the scenes getting stuff set up. I'm better pointing the spot light than being in front of it...unlike you," she eldowed him softly, he nudged her back.
"Hey, nothing wrong with a good spot light. Anyway, how was your year off? Your dad still mad at you?"
Joey sighed, putting her hands into her sweater pocket. "You should have heard his passive aggressive comments when they dropped me off. He's happy I finally enrolled, but I just needed some time for me, you know? I wasn't ready to go right back into studying." He nodded along, his bottom hands fidgeting slightly.
"I'm glad you took the time for yourself " there was a sad tone in his voice, almost like he wished he could have done the same. "Nonetheless I'm happy you're hear now so I can show you off to my friends. They all think I'm making you up to sound cool."
"Oh, yeah sure-"
"Hey, Javier!" Another voice called to them from the other side of the path, a large monster was rushing towards them. He was red scaled and had a small horn on the tip of his nose. He also had the same pattern Javi's sweater had. "We need you back at the house, we gotta get stuff unpacked and set up for this weekend." Javi nodded, turning back to Joey with a sorry expression.
"OK thanks, Chip." He started to take steps towards Chip, still looking back at Joey. "I'm sorry, I have to go, but we can hangout tomorrow after your lessons."
"Yeah that's fine, I have to go check on my bags anyway and find my dorm. I'll see you tomorrow." Both boys ran down the path, towards frat row. Joey turned around back towards the club tables and entered the dorm building.
Getting her room key, she slipped down the hallway, students were hanging out in the hallway talking and moving furniture.
Getting to her room she saw the door was already open and a monster was unpacking a small cardboard box.
"Hello?" Joey said softly knocking on the doorframe. The monster turned around, her smile grew seeing Joey standing there.
"Hi, are you Josephine?" She asked as Joey walked into the room. Joey laughed extending her hand.
"Yes, but please call me Joey."
"OK, well, hey I'm Janelle, it's nice to meet you." She had a warm smile with two flangs hanging out from her top lip and two small horns poking out the side of her head.
After a few hours of unpacking their stuff the girls were laying down in their beds talking about their lives.
"I can't believe your dad said those things about you taking a year off, honestly I wanted to but...plans changed." She said the last part proudly, arms crossed behind her head propping it up.
"And what caused this change of plans?" A smile creeped onto Janelles face, her scaled cheeks darkening.
"It was a scholarship thing, I couldn't afford to go without them. Also it worked out that my boyfriend was enrolling the same year, so we wouldn't have to do long distance." She laughed, Joey shook her head, shoving it into her pillow and laughing.
"What about you? Do you have a significant other?" Joey sighed, lifting her head from the pillow, shrugging her shoulders, she rolled onto her stomach so her wings wouldn't be pressed into the bed.
"Nope, not really something I'm actively looking for while I'm here. Parties and drinking, and boyfriends aren't things on my plan right now." Janelle nodded.
"Does that mean you won't go to rush week with me? We don't have to drink but it would be fun to hangout with you and introduce you to my other friends." Joey smiled at Janelles enthusiasm.
"I'll go with you, just don't leave me alone with frat boys."
"Deal."
