Anger fueled Joey's legs as she speed walked to her dorm, gripping the doorknob she paused. She turned on her heels, heading out of the common area and back into campus towards the administration's office.
Books held tightly to her chest she asked if the Dean was in. The receptionist picked up the phone, made a quick call, and nodded for Joey to go in.
Joey took a quick walk down the hall, standing in front of a tall wooden door with "Dean Hardscrabble" engraved in gold on the door. She knocked lightly, hearing stuffing papers and books behind the door.
"Yes, come in," Joey opened the door and quickly closed it, sighing as she did so. Throwing her books in one chair and herself in the other.
"Glad to finally have you in my office, Miss Kingsley," Her Aunt mused, stapling a packet of papers together and setting them on a different pile.
"Hi, sorry I didn't come in sooner...I was busy," She put her elbows on the desk, leaning forward towards Joey.
"Oh no, my dear, I completely understand, but if you didn't make an apparence I would have called you in here during one of your classes." She gave a mischievous smile, Joey chuckled softly. "What's wrong, Josephine?"
"Stupid frat boys," Joey ran a hand down her scaled face, she slumped back in the chair.
"Ah, yes they are quiet....the handful. Which ones are giving you trouble? Perhaps I could have a word with them?"
"No, please don't talk with them, I don't want them to know. And it's the ROR's." Joey looked away from her Aunts stare.
"Why do you insist no one knows about our family? It could do wonders for you to have a big name,"
"I don't want that, that's me just taking your name, not making my own. I wanna be my own monster. And I want to know that monsters are friends with me because I'm me, rather than who I'm family with," Joey starting fidgeting with her jacket zipper.
Dean was silent for a moment, taking in what her niece had said.
"How are these boys bothering you?"
"They're rude and disrespectful, and the president is the worst of all of them. You know Javier, my best friend, yeah he thinks Javi and I shouldn't hang out anymore because I'm "a bad influence" so I've got that happening right now," The Dean's eyes widened.
"Javi isn't- doesn't want to pick sides but that's kinda what's happening,"
"True friends shouldn't make you choose between them and others,"
"That's what I told him! But you know how Javi gets."
"I'm sure Javier will come around, he has a way of sticking around, it might help if you're honest with him, really honest," She gave a knowing and wise smile, interlocking her fingers ontop of the desk. "And regarding Mr Worhtington, just try to ignore him, I'm sure he'll calm down,"
"Thanks, Aunt Abigail," They smiled warmly at each other. Joey sighed, shoulders slumped.
"Also, if I may ask, would you mind doing a demonstration for one of the finals classes? I would want to introduce you as my niece though," Joey sighed.
"When would this be?"
"Late December, in about 3 months. Just enought time for you to make friends and get a good reputation,"
"I'll think about it, it mostly depends on who's in the class-"
"I'll send you a list of all the students, and then you can think it over. Sound good?"
"Ok, sounds good," Joey gave a small chuckle at her excitement. Her phone buzzed in her pocket. Taking it out she saw a text message from an unknown number.
Unsaved Number: Hey Joey! It's Brock from the Greek Council, we're having our first meeting tonight in classroom 413 near the door lab at 6 PM. Hope to see you there!
Joey: Hey Brock! You can count on me being there!
Brock: Sweet! :P
"Who's that you're texting?" Abigail asked, sorting through some of the stacks of papers on her large wooden desk.
"I uh, joined the Greek Council so I could help behind the scenes for the Scare Games," her eyes lit up.
"Oh that's exciting, a part of me was hoping you would join a sorority and compete, but if you're in any way involved in the games, I'm happy. Especially since what happened last year won't repeat itself," She rolled her eyes with a laugh, Joey's brow raised, leaning forward slightly in her chair.
"What happened last year?"
"These 2 freshman failed their final exams and made a bet with me that if they won the Scare Games I would let their whole team into the Scare program,"
"And?" Joey was sitting on the edge of her chair, on one had ever made a bet like that with her Aunt. "What happened? Did they win? Are they still in school?" She gave a forced chuckle, looking away with a reminiscing stare.
"They, well they practically won, they beat every single event, even though they weren't outwardly scary. The final challenge came and when the Scare simulator went off, they won."
"So they're in the program now?"
"No, the first 2 freshman I was mentioning cheated and tampered with the Scare simulator, then went through an untested human door. I had to expelle them, but I did let the rest of the team join. The trophy went to the other team on account of Mr. Sullivan's mistake."
Joey's jaw was on the floor, she had heard stories of the games but nothing like this.
"Who was the other team?"
"Roar Omega Roar, that pesky fraternity you're struggling with now," she gave a small chuckle leaning back in her chair, resting her hands on her lap.
The realization hit Joey like a bus. That was the reason Javi had been so proud about the games. That was why Johnng was so proud of the trophy. That was why everyone was whispering and fighting with ROR.
Joey groaned, burying her face in her hands, the Dean raised an eyebrow.
"What's wrong, my dear?"
"I think I've been a real jerk," She scoffed at the idea. "I said something to Javi and Johnny about the games not realizing, I mean he was still worse than me, but..." She sighed, standing and grabbing her things.
"I need to go and clear my head and focus on my classes for a little while," the Dean nodded.
"Javier will come around and you'll find the right words to say," She smiled warmly, Joey reached for the door handle, glancing back.
"Thanks Aunt Abigail, I promise I'll come visit for lunch some day,"
"Or I could call you from class?"
"Yeah, don't do that please," They shared a laugh as Joey opened the door and left the room with a sigh.
She headed to her next class which would be starting in 30 minutes. After the Greek Council meeting she would try reaching out to Javi.
