I got in my dress first so that I could help Shelly into her's. She paced the room with nerves. "Hey can you do me up?" With a little tugging and pulling I was a snug as a bug, and not sure I could breath. I turned around and Shelly was fanning her eyes. "Oh, Shit Brooklyn you're going to make me mess up my makeup. You look so beautiful."
"I do, don't I. I feel like one of those women that goes to parties on Wall Street." I sat down on the bed and put on my shoes. When I stood up the dress just barely brushed the floor. Good thing to, I was worried I would trip on my face. I walked over and unzipped the bag to Shelly's dress. "Are you ready?"
"Yes, I have been ready for a long time." I flayed the dress out on the floor and Shelly stepped in. We pulled the dress up and I fastened it shut. She sat on the bed and I put on her shoes. After all was assembled she walked over to the mirror and just stood there. "I almost forgot, I have something for you." I hurried over to my suitcase the best I could in these shoes. I reached in the pocket, rummaged for the box and pulled it out. I stared at it for a moment for the bittersweet memories attached to this precious item. I stood up, gathered my emotions before I ruined my makeup and walked back over to Shelly.
"I wanted to share this with you. It was something I had on my wedding day." I opened the box and Shelly burst into tears. "Brooklyn I can't wear this!"
"Yes, you can Shelly. Our moms would have wanted this. I wore it on my wedding day and I want to share it with you."
"Brooklyn, I mean it's stunning thank you!" She said well patting her eyes dry, trying to not smear her mascara. I pulled the white gold necklace out of the box. "Turn around." Shelly pulled her hair out of her way. I draped the necklace around her neck.
Grandma's blue sapphire hung so delicate off her collar bone. "Grandma, your mother, my mother and me have all worn this at our weddings. I hope one day our daughters will wear it too. I am going to tell you what your mom told me on my wedding day. This is your something old, something borrowed, and something blue." I turned Shelly around to look her in the eyes. Today is your something new."
She grabbed me up in a huge hug. "I miss my mom Brooklyn. I hate that she's not here with me today, but you went without your mom on your wedding day, so I knew I could do it. But I miss her so much."
I hugged her back. "Mom and Aunt Elizabeth are looking down on both of us today, and they are smiling at how wonderful their headstrong stubborn daughters turned out." I wiped more tears from her face. "Now let's go get you married."
There was another tap at the door. "We are popular today?" I went to go answer it. Shelly was looking in the mirror one last time. "No it's the shuttle to the beach."
"Shuttle?"
"You didn't think I was prancing through the resort dressed like this did you. They sent a golf cart buggy to come and take us there. It was part of the wedding package. They will take us to the reception dinner as well."
"Cinderella your chariot awaits." I held open the door as she gathered her dress up in her hands and walked out. She had such a poise to her today. Once loaded up in the cart, dress and all we were off. "He's going to show up? Ed will be there when I get there?"
Where was this coming from. I knew she was nervous, but Ed was so dedicated to her, I couldn't believe him not showing was even a concern in her mind. "Shelly of course Ed will be there. Honey he is so in love with you. He is probably there already making sure everything is perfect."
"I sure hope so, I don't know what I will do if he doesn't show! I think I will go crazy and become a cat lady with you." We both snickered. "You are not becoming a cat lady. He will be there I promise." I placed my hand in hers and we sat silent the whole time. I could see she was mentally preparing herself. She took in long breaths and slowly let the back out. I had never in my life seen her this vulnerable.
