Many hours of pushing later and you were just about ready to push the baby out.
"Come on now Nell this is the final stretch. I can see the head, it has a lot of hair. Two more pushes and we will have this baby out." The doctor said gleefully.
Sweat dripping from your brow you sat up straight and held on tight to Chris and the other nurses hand. Gritting your teeth you pushed with all your might groaning your way through it. Another push with the next contraction and you heard a small scream.
"It's a girl, baby we have a girl." Chris kisses your sweaty head and begins crying. "You done so well. You were so amazing."
The doctor placed the gooey, red, squawking baby girl in your waiting arms and then encouraged Chris to cut the cord.
Looking down at your new baby girl you couldn't believe how lucky you were. You never knew how much you could love something that had only been in the world for a few seconds but your heart was glowing with love. Closing your eyes briefly and opening them again a nauseas feeling washed over you. The room began to spin and you could feel your body starting to go numb.
"Chris take the baby." You whispered. "I think I'm going to...."
Monitors began beeping and wailing. You passed out and instantly Chris took the baby from your arms before they went completely limp.
"What, what's happening? Nell. Oh my god what's going on?" Chris shouted standing at the side of the bed with the baby wrapped in his arms.
"Nell is hemorrhaging. We need to get her down to theatre. We will update you as soon as we can but we need to get her there now." The doctor said calmly in-between shouting instructions to the people entering the room and around the bed.
"Nell I love you, please, god please just help her." Chris shouted after you as you are wheeled from the room.
POV CHRIS
"It's ok baby girl. Your mummy is a fighter and she is going to be back with us in no time."
Chris had called Maggie and Kevin, also Lisa to come to the hospital, but now with you in surgery he wasn't sure if it was the right thing to do or not. Pacing the room he heard a faint knock on the door and opened it while holding the snuggled baby in his arms.
Maggie, Kevin, Lisa and Scott walked in with Mark following closely behind, him and Scott had become close.
"How is she, do you know what is happening? When will she be out of surgery?" Maggie asked worriedly.
"Christ woman give him a moment. Congratulations Chris, how are you?" Kevin asked. He was worried as well but he could see the panic on Chris' face and didn't want to add to the worry.
"She is in surgery, having a laparotomy. They needed to find the source of the hemorrhage. They haven't said anything else but they shouldn't be much longer. God it all happened so quick." Chris had tears in his eyes again but shook them away immediately but it done nothing.
"Here give me her, take a moment." Maggie said. Chris handed over the baby and then sat on the chair letting the tears fall freely. Burying his head in his hands he searched for the right thing to say to your parents. Was this his fault. If he had got you here sooner. Maybe if he had insisted on not letting you go out for the walk.
Moments later the doctor came.
"Mr Evans. Nell is out of theatre and we have moved her to a more comfortable room. She will most likely be recovering from shock and be out for a little while. We had to give her a blood transfusion but everything went well and she will make a full recovery. I can show you to her room but you will have to wait until she is awake before anymore visitors I'm afraid." She said kindly looking around at the thankful faces in front of her.
