The End of A Reign of Terror?
Recovery operations commence, starting rumours about the possible cause of the explosion as well as the aftereffects of the demise of the feared gang leader.
The explosion that destroyed the mansion on Shanghai's outskirts last weekend (Shanghai Police confirmed it to be the residence of gang leader Li Huang) left behind no survivors. While up until recently, the rescue workers were conducting a rescue operation, in the early morning hours the police and the head of the operations team changed their tone, now officially calling it a recovery operation thus giving up the hope - or fear - of finding survivors in the ruins.
As for the cause of the explosion, Shanghai's residents have to make do with speculations. At this point, one of the more plausible assumptions is that leaking gas pipes led to the disaster. The gang leader was very selective of the people he allowed to enter the old mansion, which could have led to a neglect of regular maintenance work.
Other sources speculate that given the circle he was in, this could have been an attack or revenge from a hostile gang. Police have neither confirmed nor denied these possibilities.
At present, it appears that the investigations focus on the explosion having been an accident. Whether or not that is for tactical reasons or just an attempt not to attract the attention or disfavour of an unknown gang is questionable. Either way, Shanghai police as well as government officials stress that they want to look into all possibilities to provide the city and its residents with complete clarification.
Meanwhile, residents don't so much worry about the reason for the explosion as for whether or not this means the end of the crushing tyranny of Li Huang and his gang as it is speculated that a large number of his men were located in the mansion at the time of the explosion. Again, the public is awaiting confirmation, yet even without it, a feeling of relief has already begun to set in.
