After School
Kol handed Klaus the sealed envelope and stood and waited for judgment. He clasped his hands behind his back and stared straight ahead.
"It says you failed a pop quiz," Klaus read. 'but it also says you are a capable student who could bring up his grade with some effort. you have another month to do so."
Kol sighed, "I secured a tutor tonight. A girl in my class, she' s rather clever and said she would help me. She will meet me at the Grill around 6pm. I think Estel needs help, also."
"Estel has the same class?" Klaus asked with suspicion.
"Nay, she is in another class, but I think she is having trouble also," Kol threw out.
Klaus smiled indulgently, "I do not quite believe you, but I see you have taken a fancy to the lass. You may go, but Kol, I do expect you to do some studying there."
Kol was amazed, "You mean, I can go?"
"Yes, we told you if you were honest, we would support you, did we not?" Klaus added. "And maybe this is my way of trying to start to make amends to you."
Kol grinned, "Thank you, Niklaus. Did old Mr. Fell say that the quiz I failed was on WWII?"
"No, it did not," Klaus said in confusion.
"Nik, um, I know you said the first World War was brutal in the trenches, but the second? Why didn't you try to stop it? The atrocities? What they did? The Nazis? The millions of innocent civilians slaughtered...," Kol asked softly.
"Sit down, Kol," Klaus said heavily. "It is a long story."
"It was so terrible, Brother. I wish that...someone could have stopped it," Kol commented.
"Kol, world events such as these are beyond us. Just like we could not stop slavery, per say, or child abuse, or prostitution, we could not stop war. At the time, the things the Nazis were during were secret, hidden. We did not know, but even if we did, what could we have done?" Klaus said.
"Kill Hitler? Compel Himler...I don't know something?" Kol urged. "Anything."
"Look, the truth is that I was in Europe in the 1930s. I got caught up with this terrible man named August Müller. He was a vampire purist and hated wolves, having no idea of my true linage. We fought and he went off to slaughter entire villages of European werewolf packs," Klaus started.
Kol listened intently, "So you deigned to save wolves instead of 50 million people?'
"Kol, Elijah joined me, but we did not know of the storm to come. August Müller's rampages drew Mikael's attention and we ended up fleeing back to North America. We helped the war effort as much as we could from these shores, but it wasn't until later that the true scope of the horrors was revealed. Brother, there are horrors that take place every day on this Earth, we cannot stop them all," Klaus explained carefully.
Kol nodded, "I just wish we could do more. But I guess I could start small. Nik, there are students at school who get abused by others because they are too studious or not athletic enough. Some of the others just laugh and play along so they do not become victims of this behavior themselves. It bothers me, but I can't help them all."
Klaus stood, "We can only do our small part. How is Estel holding up? That foster mother of hers is absolutely bonkers. I do want to speak with Estel about her at some point."
