Chapter Text

Mystic Falls High School

Kol had called Klaus at lunch to pick him up at school since detention ran an hour after school. Kol walked into the detention room not knowing what to expect. There were three other kids there, already sitting. Two were boys he had seen around, and the third was a girl with long auburn hair that he had never noticed before. Kol was not much interested in dating humans. It was too tempting to just drain them dry. He preferred sultry witches or sexy vampires that could keep up with him like Caroline....He signed in with the detention supervisor and sat back down. He had brought his homework and figured he could at least finish that and even study for a history test. If Nik hadn't daggered him so much, he would not have missed the events on the test, he would have lived through them. The thought didn't really make him sad, it was the past.

"Can I go to the bathroom?" the girl with the auburn hair asked.

"Hurry up," Miss Freedman said firmly, "You have five minutes, Estel."

Kol watched her without much interest until her saw her eyes, they were beautiful. They were a golden brown color that he had never seen before, like amber. She had pale skin sprinkled with freckles. She wore a short plaid skirt and a white button down shirt. Kol looked at her feet in shock. Combat boots? Was she a mercenary? A soldier of fortune? An odd choice of foot ware for a young lady, in his opinion.

"What are you looking at?" the girl hissed with aggression.

Kol put out his palms in mock innocence, "Nothing, darling."

"Don't call me 'darling'!" the girl said as she stomped past.

"Estel! One more word and you are getting another detention!" the supervisor threatened. "I mean it."

"One more word," Estel mumbled.

"Fine," Miss Freedman said staunchly, as she went to fill out another detention form.

The other boys in detention laughed until the teacher cut her eyes at them in a silent warning. They went back to their books, leaving Kol to wonder what had happened in solitude.

Kol went back to his math problems and glanced at the clock, Estel, as the teacher called her, had been gone seven minutes. Miss Freedman huffed and walked to the door in frustration.

"Ester, move it. You already got yourself in trouble again. Was it worth it?" Kol heard Miss Freedman say from the door. He zoned in with his Original vampire hearing.

Ester sighed, "No, sorry."

"Look, I know things aren't easy right now. I will give you another chance, but that's it. How is it going with your new foster family?" Miss Freedman asked softly in a kinder tone.

Ester seemed to consider her words carefully, "They are okay. Upright and strict. They expect me to be perfect. They were really mad about this detention."

"There is going to be an adjustment period, you know that. But hang in there. Vandalizing the girls' restroom was not the best choice to make, was it?" Miss Freedman said with a hint of amusement.

"No, but it was a dare. I thought if I took the fall, the others would respect me. But instead, all it did was get me here," Estel confessed.

"Okay, go back in and get some work done. You know I'm here if you need to talk. And don't forget about that article review you owe me. It's ten points," Miss Freedman reminded her.
