NINETY SIX

BONFIRE

River hadn't seen anyone in quite some time, she'd refused to go to school and she'd also refused to speak to her grandfather about what she was choosing for the unborn child.

Silas had messaged her frequently too but he hadn't really taken the hint about River not wanting to speak to him or anybody for that matter. So when he knocked at her window and let himself in through the glass River didn't even want to look at him.

"Hey." Silas spoke softly, looking out into the darkness, "We're going to the bonfire and everyone wants you to come, Angelica." He spoke looking at the girls baggy clothes up and down and remembering his secret all over again.

"I can't come." River spoke, "Not like I'd be able to drink anyway, but you'd know that." She gave Silas a glare and he brought up his hand to scratch the back of his neck anxiously, he knew he'd fucked up.

"I'm sorry. I really am." Silas spoke chewing on his lip, "Did they find out?" He questioned motioning downstairs to where he could only imagine Reggie was pacing with anger.

"Well of course, you never hid the test." River whispered and then it dawned on Silas that that was probably the least he could have done for her and he was once again swarmed with guilt. He kept feeling like he was fucking up as a best friend.

"Come with us, I want you to be there tonight." Silas begged putting his hands together in a prayer, "Plus I have a lot of making up to do and so it's mandatory that we spend more time together." He teased and River could help but smile.

She was angry at Silas but not nearly as much as she was with herself. Plus she'd missed friends and feeling loved, she felt abandoned and lonely.

"Fine." She responded crashing into Silas' chest for a much needed hug and the boy tightened his grip around her so much so he swore that his knuckles were going to turn a shade of white.

River followed Silas out of the window and towards the van where John B happily cheered and tapped a tune on the steering wheel excitedly. JJ sent her a soft smile and she took a seat next to him, he rested his hand on her thigh and despite her feelings she never pushed him off.

Kie was awfully quiet, it was kind of eerie and she kept giving both River and JJ disgusted looks which both of them caught onto they just didn't seem to mention.

"Look, I'm just saying that if you talk to your parents, you know, like actually let them talk and listen maybe they'd let you back." Pope started up towards Kie as they got out of the van and started to head towards the bonfire.

"Okay. I feel like you're not listening to me. You sound like my dad." Kie spoke up she gave River another glare, "It's not even my fault let's start there. It's just classic you know? She kicks me out because somebody else fucks up their lives."

"Is she talking about me?" River asked in a cautious whisper towards Silas who swung his arm over the blonde girl as they walked further towards the centre of the bonfire.

JJ picked up a solo cup and filled it to the brim of whatever he could find but when he offered it to River she refused it, Kie reached forward and took the cup meant for the blonde and downed it in seconds.

"She won't be needing that." Kie snarled offering the empty cup back out to be filled.

"What is your problem?" River suddenly blurted and the Pogue's all turned in on themselves to listen to the only girls left stand face to face to argue. "Come on, you're all high and mighty when you want to talk shit behind my back. Say it to my face."

"Maybe this wasn't a good idea." Silas spoke from behind River putting both his hands on either sides of her shoulders to try and pull her away.

"What's my problem? My problem is you, bitch." Kie spoke and JJ stepped forward protectively but John B held him backwards telling him not to get involved in a cat fight. "You're the reason I was kicked out, all because you're an irresponsible-" she took a second to look at JJ yearning to be with him, "-whore."

"What the fuck, Kie?" Pope spoke up pulling her backwards to stop her but she yanked herself out of the boys grip to stand chest to chest with the small blonde.

"Everybody listen up!" Kiara called out to the whole bonfire, standing up on a platform, "Everybody I want you to raise a toast, here's to River Angelica Cross!" She continued on and River grated her teeth and looked at JJ to see if he was going to do anything. "To River, the cuts very own slut and soon to be mother. Let's raise a glass to teen pregnancy." Kie shouted.

Everyone fell completely silent and River couldn't control herself, she pulled back her hand and smashed her across the face the whole bonfire racing to hold their favourite back.
