Chapter 26

The next day, Kakashi asked Sakura and Yuma to guard Tazuna as he tended to the bridge, and the duo prepared before following their client into town.

They looked around the sad village, and a man tried to pick-pocket Sakura. That man, however, was stopped in his tracks by a small hand seizing his wrist and rusty eyes locking his in a piercing glare.

"If you value your life, you will leave when I release you," Yuma said venomously, causing Tazuna, Sakura, and a few pedestrians to watch in surprise. "But take one step closer to Sakura, and I will kill you in the most agonizing way imaginable."

She let go of the mans wrist, and he immediately stumbled away, wanting nothing more than to be free of the rust colored gaze that threatened him.

"T-Thank you, Yuma-chan," Sakura said, touched and slightly fearful by the action.

Yuma grinned lightly at Sakura. "I said I'd protect my team. And my nakama."

"Nakama..." Sakura breathed, but Yuma was digging distractedly through her pouch and pulled out a handful of candy, popping a cinnamon one into her mouth.

A small hand touched Yuma's leg and the frightening girl blinked, looking down at a brave young girl with wide innocent eyes and a dirty face.

"Please," said the child, holding out puny hands.

Yuma suddenly smiled a gentle smile. Sakura and Tazuna gasped, seeing that she looked angelic when smiling so, and they hardly expected such a kind look from such a... Lethal girl.

"Here," Yuma said quietly, digging through her pouch and bringing out another handful of candy before dropping both handfuls into the tiny hands.

The girl gasped, eyes going wide as the large amount of candy, before grinning at Yuma. "Thanks nii-chan!"

Then the little girl ran off, leaving the three behind. Yuma watched the girl retreat, and Sakura and Tazuna watched as the warmth slowly began to drain from her expression.

"We should go," Yuma said, grinning playfully at Tazuna. "The bridge needs worked on, right, Tazu-chan?"

"Er, yeah," Tazuna agreed, unsure yet how to quite respond to this young, strange girl. "Yeah, lets go."

On the bridge, Tazuna was at a loss. All of his workers were leaving him, and he couldn't do the work by himself.

The pink haired guard was simply leaning against the bridge railing, while the grey haired one was- wait...

Where was the little sadist?

*screech screech screeeeeeeeeeeech*

"What the hell is that noise?" Tazuna mumbled, aggravated, as he turned to stop the sound.

What he saw was the small girl, Yuma, trying to pull a heavy beam.

"What... are you doing?" He asked, walking over to her.

"Hel.... ping...." She grunted, pulling with all her strength as her face reddened from exertion.

Tazuna blinked, then set the beam on the ground before kneeling before her. "You're too small to move heavy steel beams, Yuma," he said softly.

Yuma pouted. "But all your other workers abandoned you! And I don't wanna just stand around! That's boring!"

Her insistence to help him surprised Tazuna, and he found himself smiling gently.

"Thanks, Kid," he said, patting her head. "I suppose, if you really want to..." He paused taking off his tool belt. "You can hand me the tools I need and let me handle the heavy lifting."

Yuma beamed up at him and nodded quickly. "Yeah!"

Tazuna chuckled and helped her fasten the tool belt around her, having the wrap the belt itself nearly two and a half times around her before tying it off.

"Ready to get started?" He asked.

Yuma grinned, holding out a thumbs up. "You betcha!"

"We're home!" Tazuna called as he and Sakura walked through the doorway. Yuma was on Tazuna's back, sleeping soundly.

"Looks like someone's tired," Tsuname said quietly, trying to hide her smile behind her hand.

Tazuna smiled. "She was determined to help out since the last of my help ran off, bless her heart, so I let her hand me tools as I worked. But by the end of the day she was drilling rivets in like she'd been doing it her whole life. Even got Sakura to help her when she dropped the rivet bucket."

Kakashi sighed, smiling, and took Yuma in his arms. "I'll put her to bed," he said quietly, carrying her out of the living room and into her and Sakura's room.
