"Grampa Saru!" Yuma yelled, bursting through the door to the third Hokage's office and flying at the man himself.
"Ah, Yuma!" The Hokage laughed, catching the small child and bouncing her on his lap. "How was your first mission?"
"Really confusing!" Exclaimed the grey haired girl as Kakashi stood silently to the side, the other three having gone home. "Like, really! I was happy and angry and sad and confused and everything!"
"Oh my, that sounds tiring," the third, glancing questionably at Kakashi, who nodded.
They'd speak alone later.
"It was! And something weird happened! It was like I had a demon in me!" Yuma said loudly, throwing her hands into the air. "It kept telling me to kill everyone and this weird chakra stuff came from me and burnt my skin, look!" She held out her arm, and the third noticed how her flesh was slightly red.
"Oh dear, are you alright?" He asked, alarmed.
"Oh yeah, I'm fine. He's not happy though. He keeps screaming at me."
"He keeps...." The third sighed. "Yuma, do you believe that you truly have a demon within you?"
"Maybe," Yuma frowned. "But couldn't it just mean I'm going crazy or something?"
Sarutobi sighed softly again and stopped bouncing his knee, causing Yuma to still and look at him in confusion.
"Grampa Saru... What's wrong?" She asked.
Kakashi's eyes widened in awareness as he realized what was about to be said.
And so, for the next hour, the third began to explain what, exactly was inside Yuma. He only explained the demon, believing that telling her about Kakashi's true relation to her would be too much.
At the end, Yuma got off the Hokage's lap and stepped back eyes wide and full of hurt.
"You only got me out so I couldn't kill anyone," she muttered.
"Yuma-" Kakashi started.
"You..." The small girl look at him. "You knew all along." She looked from one adult to the other. "You never cared about me... You just didn't want me to... To go crazy and kill everyone..."
"Yuma, please," began the Hokage sadly, but the red eyed girl sobbed and ran from the office.
"Yuma!" Kakashi yelled, reaching out a hand, but she was gone.
"This is my fault," the third sighed. "I thought she could handle it."
Kakashi didn't answer, but stared at the doorway his baby cousin had left through, unsure of whether or not taking chase would be wise at this time.
"We need to trust her, Kakashi," the third said quietly. "Lets see what happens."
Kakashi nodded once. "I'll always trust Yuma."
Meanwhile, Yuma was running. She was suddenly exactly aware why all the villagers stared at her with hatred, why they cleared a path as she ran. They knew she was a monster. They didn't care about her.
She wasn't surprised.
Eventually, Yuma stopped running and found herself in a field with a single tree in the center. Under the tree laid a familiar boy.
Yuma knew what she was now. She was a monster. A real monster, but, she knew that she wouldn't hurt him. She knew for a fact.
A shadow fell over Shikamaru's peaceful body, causing him to make a confused noise and crack open one eye. Standing over him, he saw Yuma. He grinned, about to send a greeting, but stopped as he noticed the tears shining in her rusty eyes.
"What's wrong, Yuma?" He asked, sitting up.
Yuma said nothing, simply sitting beside him with her knees pulled to her chest and her face buried in her knees.
"Yuma?" Shikamaru said again. "What's up?"
"What would you do... If I were a monster?" The girl beside him asked quietly.
Shikamaru's eyes widened. His parents had talked to him about this when they themselves were informed, but that didn't matter to Shikamaru. He still really liked Yuma.
"You're not a monster," he said gently.
"I kill people, Shika," the girl beside him sniffed. "I enjoy the suffering of most, I've got.... I've got a demon inside me. What else could I be?"
Shikamaru was silent a moment, slightly surprised that she would confide this to him, not knowing that he already knew. But he scooted closer to her and put his arm around her shoulders. Immediately, she leaned into his embrace, and listened quietly as he spoke.
"Yuma, I know you. You're a sweet girl- around me anyways. You're loud and fun, and always very interesting to have a conversation with. I don't care if you are hosting a demon. That demon does not define you, Yuma. You define you."
Yuma said nothing. Shikamaru sighed.
"Yuma, why don't you come over to my house for dinner tonight? I'll show you that not everyone is so easily convinced that you're bad."
"........ I dunno Shika....." Yuma muttered. "I doubt your parents would be very thrilled about that...."
"Are you kidding? My mom's been dying to meet you," Shikamaru chuckled. "She's always asking when I'm gonna have you over, that troublesome woman. I think keeping her waiting any longer will result in her chasing me with a mop."
A fit of giggles escaped Yuma, and Shikamaru was glad. He was happy that he could cheer her up.
"Okay, Shika," she sighed after calming.
"Come on," the brunette boy smiled, pulling her up with him. He took her hand gently as began to lead the way until she stopped him, causing him to look back in concern and confusion. "Yuma?"
"Shika," Yuma said, smiling gently in a way Shikamaru's never seen from her before. "Thank you. You're my best friend."
And, just like she'd seen on that weird show Tsuname and Sakura had made her watch, Yuma stretched up on her toes and planted her lips on Shikamaru's before beginning to pull him in the direction he'd started for in the beginning.
Trailing behind her, Shikamaru's face was bright red, clashing terribly with his forest green jacket as he covered his lips with his free hand. He was staring at the grey haired girl in front of him in shock, unable to say anything in fear of his voice betraying him. He noted that Yuma didn't seem to think what she'd done was out of the ordinary, so after a good few minutes, Shikamaru pulled himself together and noticed that they were going in the wrong direction.
"Oi," he said, stopping her as she had him. She looked back with a confused hum. He pointed to his left. "My house is this way."
Yuma laughed. "Oh, alright then!"
Shikamaru's mind was still fuzzy as he led her to his home, unable to keep a small, pleased smile from his lips.
