The herd of deer felt my approach and started sprinting. Liking to chase my meals, I gave them a minute head start then, I began to running. I jumped 30 feet across the forest floor and caught a big buck. Quickly, I sunk my teeth into the side of its skin and began to drink. The hot liquid gushed into my mouth. Ahh, it was the elixir of life. When I finished with that one, I discarded it into some shrubs and ran. I found the pack again quickly. There, located next to a tree was a baby doe. It's mother stood between me and the daughter. I leaped and killed the mother, draining it in under a minute. Then, I slowly moved towards the baby. I went slow, as to not startle it anymore. I reached down and unhooked it's leg from the branch. Once it was free, it sprinted away but I didn't dare to follow it. I hid the mother doe in the small river that ran through the woods and began going home.
Suddenly, there was a female voice yelling. I moved north about two miles and stopped at a house in the middle of the woods. There on the ground was a young woman and a man was standing over her with a belt filled with needles.
"Please! Please stop!" The girl screamed.
The man just laughed and continued to beat her. He stopped for a second only to take her arm and twist it backwards until it snapped. There was a small pop and most likely the man didn't hear it. The girl screamed and tears where running down her face. He pushed her back on to the ground making it where she had to catch herself with her broken arm. The girl let out a blood freezing scream upon which the man went inside leaving her there bawling.
Slowing, I made my way towards her. I snapped a tree limb, letting her know that she was not alone. She looked up and fear covered her face.
"I'm not going to hurt you. My name is Daniel. Can I help you?"
She nodded her head and I moved till I was sitting next to her. Her shirt was ripped and her back was bleeding. Her blood smelled amazing. I wanted to taste it but I knew I would kill her if I did. For a vampire, there was no such thing as a taste. Once we tasted blood it became hard to stop. Of course not impossible but extremely hard.
"Do you mind if I pick you up? I can get you help faster that way."
She looked at me then down at her tattered shirt. Her bra was showing and I could feel that she was uncomfortable with me touching her when she looked like she did. I unzipped my sweatshirt and held it out to her. She smiled slightly and attempted to put it on. I had to help her when it can to her broken arm and she muttered a quiet "thank you". Other than that she said nothing else. I picked her up and pulled her into my chest. She moaned in pain and closed her eyes.
"Sorry." I muttered and looked down at her.
She was thin, almost sickly, and she was covered in dirt but she was still beautiful. I made sure her eyes were closed still and took off running. I was was careful not to jostle her. I made the five mile hike home in ten minutes. I opened the back door to my house and ran up the three flights of stairs to my room. I slowly put her on her stomach on top my bed. I was glad that I had it now. Beth, my mother for all intended reasons, had insisted in one, saying that someday it might come into good use. I wasn't thrilled on getting one because as a vampire I didn't need sleep and since I wasn't married there was no reason for a bed. The girl hadn't moved at all. She must have passed out from the pain. I left my room and went to Javis' office. Javis was mated to Beth and was considered my father. He was my creator, making me second to join the family.
"Javis, you have to help me!" I pleaded.
He walked out if his office and looked at me with concern.
"Son, what's wrong? Take a deep breath." He ordered.
"Well, I was out hunting, when I heard a girl screaming. I went towards the sounds and there in the middle of the woods was a house. Outside the house there was this girl and above her was this man. He was beating her. I couldn't just leave her, so I brought her here. She needs medical help. Please, help her."
My father nodded and went up to my room. He moved towards the girl and gasped when he saw her blood and needle covered back.
"Daniel, this is going to hurt her a lot. Let me ask you, what do you want her for?" He said
"Look, I was just going to drop her off at the hospital but then I saw her face, full of love and I couldn't imagine just walking away. She is my mate."
Javis smiled and asked, "Do you want me to change her?"
Looking back, I wish someone would have given me a choice. Yet, if Javis hadn't done what he did, what would have become of the girl?
"No, it's her choice. She can decide if she wants this or not."
My father nodded and said, "That's very brave of you, as was carrying her here. Do you know her name?"
I nodded my head no and watched as my father pulled out a single needle. The girl's eyes fluttered open and her fear was evident. I reached for her hand, giving it a light squeeze.
"My dad is a doctor. He's going to help you okay? What's your name?"
Very quietly she whispered, "Emily."
Then she let out a blood curdling scream.
