"I love the lord and all his black people"
Spoken from the words of a character
Starring in a movie I gave three stars.
The plot blurring behind this one sentence
The phrase repeated over in my head.
When I first heard it, I found it funny
Thinking its sole purpose was for just that.
My best friend and I finding a new game
Not believing it could be any more.
But it's starting to feel like a prayer.
I am on my knees apologizing
Saying sorry for the hate I hold
Begging Jesus Christ for his forgiveness.
Society has ingrained into my
Consciousness that being black leads to hate
It's almost as if I am imprisoned-
"I love the lord and all his black people"
It's almost as if society has
Made me see my blackness as negative
Because every night before I go to
Sleep, my pillowcase smelling of oil,
The smooth aroma of cocoa butter
Wrapping me in a familiar hug
I whisper in the darkness of the night
"I love the lord and all his black people"

A/N: The line is from the movie High Flying Bird on Netflix, I recommend checking it out!
