Roots AKA The Grass is Greener on the Other Side Edited v2

Two summers ago we gardened together.

We loaded ourselves into the car, stopped for coffee

And would come back with a trunk full of gardening supplies.

We would haul out big bags of dirt, pallets of peppers,

Wearing our oldest shoes, stained from all of the years of wear.

In the beginning, our garden flourished.

We would pull out the hose and spend

The time watering our plants, ripping out the weeds

That prevented our growth. I put so much of my

Time and Energy into that garden.

my sweat dripping Into the dirt, soaking the roots

Putting every single piece of myself into it.

The day after the storm hit, the skies were dark,

Tree branches and plants uprooted

Leaving nothing left, nothing to salvage.

That was when it started.

That day you told me to leave,

That day was the day I realized the garden

Was all we had and without it

All we were left with were dead plants,

And bags and bags of dirt we couldn't use.
