"I love the lord and all his black people"
This phrase originates from a side character
In the 2019 Drama film, High Flying Bird.
This ongoing joke is only said when a black
Character hints at racism or slavery.
The character stands his ground and demands
The black characters remind themselves
That being black is not inherently negative.
When I first heard this phrase I laughed.
I honestly can't remember anything else about
The movie, nothing except this phrase.
I think because it reminds me of my own
Blackness, one I have seen as negative
More times than I'd like to admit.
I'm sure by now, I owe hundreds
Of chants, and I make up for those late
At night, when it's dark and my blackness
Is surrounding me, leaving the aromas
Of the culture, I had fought so hard
To leave behind, guiding the words
Out of my mouth-
"I love the lord and all his black people."
