I Love the Lord and All His Black People
Spoken from the words of a character
Starring in a movie I gave three stars.
The plot blurring behind this one sentence
The phrase repeated over in my head.
I Love the Lord and All His Black People
When I first heard it, I found it funny
thinking its sole purpose was for just that.
My best friend and I finding a new game
of quick witted dark humor.
I Love the Lord and All His Black People
But it's starting to feel like a prayer.
I am on my knees apologizing
saying sorry for the hate I hold
begging my lord and savior for his forgiveness-
I Love the Lord and All His Black People
I'm sure by now,
I owe hundreds of chants.
and I make up for those late
at night, when it's dark and all that's left
is my blackness surrounding me,
leaving the aromas of the culture,
I had fought so hard to leave behind,
guiding the words out of my mouth:
I Love the Lord and All His Black People
