2024, Maryland.

It was dark outside and the street lights were on. Sam and Clover walked down the street as Sam led Clover to whoever they were both about to go visit, while holding a bag containing the shield they had retrieved from Latvia. As they kept walking, the two kids playing basketball on the street stopped and the older one approached Sam and Clover.

"Whoa, whoa, whoa. What you doing, man? Where you goin'?" He asked.

"We're going to see your grandfather." Sam told the kid.

The kid seemed to hesitate, but then nodded towards his house.

"Alright. He in the back." He said.

"Thanks." Sam muttered.

Sam and Clover walked up to the house, that was unfamiliar to Clover. Sam took a deep breath, and sighed, before entering the backyard. Clover followed close behind him.

"Are you sure this isn't trespassing?" They whispered.

"It'll be fine. Trust me." Sam muttered.

The two got into the backyard and were immediately met by an old man watering the plants in the garden. Isaiah Bradley.

"That what I think it is?" The elder asked Sam.

Sam set the shield down near some potted plants and was about to open it.

"Leave it covered. Them Stars and Stripes don't mean nothin' good to me." Isaiah stated.

Sam nodded and picked the bag back up.

"I, uh, we need to understand." He said.

"And who exactly is we?" Isaiah questioned, gesturing to Clover.

"This is Clover." Sam told him. "Clover, this is Isaiah."

Isaiah shrugged at the young adult.

"You both understand." He muttered. "Every black man, or woman does. Whether you wanna deny it or not..."

"With all due respect, sir, I'm actually non-binary." Clover politely informed the old man.

"Don't do that bitter, old man thing with us." Sam said.

"If you ain't bitter, you're blind." Isaiah stated.

"I don't get it, okay?" Sam sighed. "What went wrong?"

Isaiah set down one of his potted plants and turned towards Sam.

"I used to be like you. Until I opened my eyes. Until I saw men in the Red Tails, the famous 332 fight for this country, only to come home to find crosses burned on their lawn." He explained.

"I'm from the south. I get that." Sam spoke. "But you were a super soldier like Steve. You could have been the next..."

"The next? What? Huh?" Isaiah questioned. "Blonde hair, blue eyes, Stars and Stripes? The entire world's been chasing that great white hope since he got dosed with the serum."

"Steve did not put you in jail." Sam stated.

Isaiah stared Sam while remaining quiet, then he sighed and led him and Clover. He retrieved what appeared to be a wooden box from one of his shelves and set it on the coffee table in front of Sam and Clover, who sat on the couch looking at some of the photographs the old man had handed them. It was a photograph of Isaiah's wife.

"She died while I was in jail. They, uh, never let a single one of her letters get to me." Isaiah told them. "They locked 'em in this box."

"What... that's awful." Clover mumbled.
