Warnings: Torture

7 years ago, in 2011...

Walking through the endless field, the sky dark as space and the wind colder than ever, a 15-year-old teenage girl with brown eyes, long black hair and a cyan winter coat on, stumbled upon a hidden facility she had been looking for. A facility holding an organization that promised to change the world. And this girl wanted to do that.

The girl hesitantly banged on the door, and she could hear machinery ringing from inside, then the door suddenly opened up like an elevator, and the girl hesitantly stepped inside. The elevator had no buttons, it simply brought her deeper within the hidden facility.

Once the elevator doors opened, the young girl stepped out and saw many scientists hard at work on various tasks, and a large set of computers in the center of the room she had entered. As the girl began to wonder if she had the right place, the computers flicked on, and the coded image of a man seemed to appear on the monitors.

"Uh... hello?" The young girl spoke, wondering if she should pull the scientists from their work.

"I would not do that. It is best not to disturb my workers in their operations." The computers spoke, with a heavy German accent.

The teenager stared at the computers in shock as the monitor had talked.

"You seem shocked. But fear not. For we are here to change the world."

"So I do have the right place." The girl muttered.

"And who might you be?" The computer asked.

The young girl was a bit hesitant to state her name to this weird computer... but she had already gotten this far. There was no turning back.

"Lola. My name is Lola Pine." She answered. "I want to help change things for the better."

The computer hummed in response.

"You have found the right place, Lola Pine." It stated. "You will make an excellent fit for our cause."

A door opened behind the young girl by the name of Lola Pine, and a couple of scientists emerged from it.

"Do you have like... a name, yourself, Little computer thing?" She then asked the computer.

"Why I do, indeed. My name is Doctor Arnim Zola." The monitor chuckled. "And we welcome you here with open arms. Hail HYDRA."

"I'm sorry, what?" Lola asked.

The computer stopped responding, and then Lola felt a hand seize her shoulder and something stab into her neck. It was a tranquilizer. Fear sparked into the teenage girl as she very quickly lost consciousness and fell into the arms of the scientist who had just put her unconscious...

Weeks went by, and Lola very quickly realized that this was not the 'changing the world' she had signed up for. Curled up in her miserable cell, Lola Pine shivered. Her body felt strangely cold. Colder than usual. She desperately wished she had never come here. Her aunt and brother must be so worried about her...

The cell bars opened up, and Lola looked up to see a soldier with a mask and a metal arm standing above her.

The Winter Soldier...

He spoke not a single word as he grabbed Lola's frail arm with his metal one and dragged her through the halls and to the laboratory where scientists had developed another new experiment.

"No, no, no, no, no, please. Let go. I don't wanna do this anymore!" Lola pleaded, but it was no use.

She was shoved onto the chair, and held down by the machinery above it as she was injected with her more stupid chemicals. And as soon as the syringe had dispensed all of its contents and removed itself from the teen's arm, Lola's body temperature cooled drastically, and frost literally began to form on the armrests, around her hands. Lola was in so much pain, she couldn't control this strange new ability and she let out a yell, ice shooting out from around her body and through the abdomens of the five or so scientists who were in the room.

Lola took some breaths, and looked around her. She began to try and pry herself free, and broke the restraints around her wrists, then she used her newfound powers to break the ankle restraints, and made a run for it.

She had gotten pretty lost, as she did not know her way around this underground facility, but she managed to pull herself together, blasting any guards who even looked at her with ice.

As she was about to lose hope, she saw the door to the one room she did remember, and she made a sprint for it. She broke through the door, pressed the elevator button multiple times until it opened, and then dashed through the elevator. The doors shut before anyone could catch her. Thank god.

Lola breathed in and out over and over again. The elevator journey up was slower than the one down, but she was free. Hopefully. Once she made it to the surface, she shot a pile of ice at the elevator, subsequently breaking it down, then she ran home using all the energy she could muster, left. When she manage to get back to the city, she was a bit disoriented, but was able to get home. How, she didn't really know. She got to her apartment door and knocked on it as much as she could. The door opened, revealing a 12-year-old boy, who looked at the young girl in shock and even relief as he gasped.

"Lola! You're okay!" He cried.

Lola entered the apartment and leaned up against the wall next to the door.

"I'm alive... yeah... can you do me a favour and get Aunt Olivia?"

The young boy, Oliver Pine, Lola's younger brother, nodded and ran down the hall. Seconds later, an older woman entered the room.

"Lola! Oh, thank goodness you're alive!" She exclaimed.

"Aunt Olivia..." Lola muttered.

Olivia Pine crouched down to stroke her niece's face, only to find it was freezing cold. She flinched as she pulled her hand back.

"Aunt Olivia... I'm sorry. I made a huge mistake. I did something I shouldn't have. I went to this organization thing that experimented on me and now I think I have ice powers that I can't get rid of..." Lola explained as she broke down into tears. "And I think there are people who are gonna want to kill me..."

"Oh Lola..." Olivia calmly spoke.

Oliver and his twin brother, Isaac Pine, came and hugged their older sister, despite the cold body. And Olivia, helped the young girl up as she covered her with blankets to try and keep her warm.

And eventually, Lola started trying to learn her newfound powers, with the help of her aunt and her younger brothers. She lived 5 years in peace and quiet once they learned to master her abilities to an extent, with no agents hunting her down. After eventually coming out as non-binary and using they/them pronouns, Lola changed their name to Clover, buzzed their hair and lived their life to the fullest... Hell, they even landed a job as an assistant ice skating coach.

Everything seemed to be going well for the youngster until those two former Avengers stepped in the ice rink saying they needed their help on behalf of Steve Rogers.

A/N: Anyhoo, little backstory as to how Clover got their powers. Ik I kinda used their deadname and pronouns for the whole chapter but it's kinda important to Clover's story.

A/N: I'll be making a couple more flashbacks on Clover's life in the future but I hope you guys liked this one. Stick around, because next chapter is gonna be the Avengers Endgame final battle!
