2024, New York.
"Clover, for the last goddamn time, I didn't know this was gonna happen!" Sam exclaimed in an argument over the phone with Clover.
"Neither did I, but here we are." Clover sighed. "Why the hell'd you give up the shield?!"
"I told you, already, Clover. And I'm not repeating myself!"
While Clover was losing their shit at Sam over the phone, Oliver and Isaac stood outside their bedroom, explaining to their aunt what was going on and why Clover was so pissed off.
"You think they're okay?" Olivia asked Oliver.
Oliver shook his head.
"I told you to turn the tv off, Ollie." Isaac told his brother.
"I know, but Clover was probably just gonna turn it right back on." Oliver argued.
"Boys, not right now, please." Olivia scolded the boys. "I'm sure this'll all clear up in a few minutes."
Things weren't cleared up in a few minutes.
"Clover, look. I have some important shit to deal with, right now. I'll have to call you back." Sam told Clover.
"Is this your way of admitting you shouldn't have given up the shield, Sam?" Clover questioned.
Sam was quiet.
"It is, isn't it?"
"I don't have time for this conversation, Clover." Sam argued.
Clover rolled their eyes.
"Course you don't..." They muttered. "Alright, then. I'll leave you to your 'important shit' that you have to deal with." They sighed.
Sam didn't get to reply as Clover angrily hung up on him and tossed their phone onto the bed. They couldn't believe any of this. They didn't want to believe any of this. But they had witnessed it on tv, right in front of them. Especially having just found out that Sam had made the decision to give up the shield. Clover mind was... pretty much all over the place.
They left their room, seeing their family waiting outside the door.
"Everything okay, Clover?" Olivia asked them.
"Yeah... I'm fine." Clover sighed. "I need some air. I'll be right back."
They opened the door to the apartment and left, leaving the building and walking down the sidewalk, letting the windy breeze hit their cold body.
Meanwhile, Sam, whom had just been hung up on, sighed as he put his phone away.
"Damn it, Clover..." He muttered under his breath.
As Sam descended down the stairs in the hangar, he could see a familiar face walking towards him. It was Bucky. And boy, was he pissed off as well.
"You shouldn't have given up the shield!" He exclaimed.
"Good to see you too, Buck." Sam sighed in response.
The two men started walking.
"This is wrong."
"Hey hey, look. I'm working, okay?" Sam said. "So all this outrage is gonna have to wait.
"You didn't know this was gonna happen?" Bucky questioned.
"No, I did not know this was gonna happen!" Sam exclaimed. "You think it didn't break my heart to see him marching up there calling himself the 'New Captain America'?"
