Chapter 48

(Y/n's POV)

Somi started speaking.

"It all started when my father and my Mom met at a birthday party of their friend. My father was in Japan for his higher studies while my Mom was a citizen of there. They liked each other from the very first time, and soon it turned into a relationship. Few years later, when his studies were completed and he was finally a doctor, he came back to Korea. And they felt it was really hard for them to stay million miles apart. So, they decided to get married. They told their families about their decision. My father's family was okay with the marriage but Mom's family was against it. Cause the groom's side gave a condition and that was my Mom had to come and live in Korea permanently. Since she was the only child of her parents, her parents couldn't agree to it. But my Mom was too mad for him. At last, the marriage happener somehow. After the marriage, my Mom came to Korea. Four years later, I was born to them. We were a happy family of three. Things were so perfect. There was eternal happiness in the house. But it started to change when I was in middle school."

"A rumor came to Mom's ear that my father was having an affair with one of his patients. Mom didn't believe it at first. But when she got to know it was true, it hit her so hard. She felt betrayed, she couldn't understand how it turned like this. Yet she tried to talk with father, to make him understand and come out from it, but he didn't listen. He got angry and fought with Mom. Since that day, everything changed. He started misbehaving with us, cursing Mom all the time, fighting with her every single night. I used to lock myself up in my room and cry until morning. Every day was a struggle, every day was a hell for me. At one point, he stopped coming home. He started living together with that woman. He even stopped bearing our expenses. Then one day, a divorce paper came to our home. My Mom was going through a terrible situation for all those time, and the divorce paper made her to reach her limit. She was so tired and exhausted, she didn't have any energy left to fight back. She signed the papers and put an end to this. But that was not the real end. It was just the beginning of another struggle."

"Since Mom never worked, she didn't have much money to suopprt both of us. So, she started finding jobs. She joined a kindergarten school as a teacher. But she couldn't continue it for long. One day, she was about to leave home for school. Suddenly, she felt pain in her chest. With the help of our neighbour, I took her to hospital. After doing some tests, it came out that she had cancer."

Somi stopped and looked down for some time.

"The divorce of my parents didn't affect me that much. But this time my world shattered. I felt like it was a nightmare and everything will be okay when I'll wake up. I'm pretty sure it was a great shock for Mom too, but she showed she was okay. I know she pretended to be strong so that I don't freak out. But I wasn't a baby anymore, I could understand everything."

"Soon Mom's condition got worse. She had pleural cancer. The infection got spreaded so much and it can never be cured. It'll kill her slowly. But a good thing was that, she was in stage 2. So, she still had some time. It took 2 months for me to process the whole thing. Mom couldn't work anymore, she didn't have any relatives in Korea, her family was against this marriage so she barely had contact with them, that's why she couldn't even tell them. But we had to survive and for that we needed money. And I was the only person to earn. "

"I took a part-time job at a cafe to support Mom when she started teaching. This time, I took another part-time job of a cashier in a store. By this time, I was in the last year of high school. In the cafe, I used to notice a group of people, three men and one woman. They were regular customers there. One day while I was serving them food, one of the men asked me my name. I answered. Then he started talking with me about various stuffs, like why I work there, how much I earn, if I'm a student etc."
