Chapter 9 - Twins

This chapter is continued from the last.

-Ruth-

I stared at Austin, not believing my ears. His twin sister?! I looked at her and then at him. There wasn't much resemblance.

"So uh.. why don't you look alike?" I asked.

"We used to. But I guess that changed." Emma answered.

Keicy's arms were still wrapped around Emma.

"So Austin, care to explain who this lovely lady is?" Emma pointed to me.

"This is Ruthelia Summers, our neighbor." He replied.

"So how many siblings do you have yet that you are hiding from me?" I asked suspiciously.

He bit his lip nervously. "Well, there's Matthew, he's like a year younger then me, and then Bethany, who is 14." He answered.

"And then, there's my brother, who's in between Keicy and Matthew, he uh.. he died." He added.

"You mean in between Bethany and Keicy." I corrected him.

"Bethany is my step sister." He answered.

I stared in shock at him. "So that means your dad cheated on your mom, but had another baby with her, which would be Keicy. Why didn't you tell me this before?" Immediately my hand slapped over my mouth. "Sorry that was blunt."

He shrugged and smiled reassuringly at me.

Just then the front door opened and I saw Austin tighten.

Lizette, Austin's Mom appeared in the doorway. Slowly, Emma turned to face her.

Lizette stared at Emma, and then she started crying. Emma walked quickly towards her and the mother and daughter were reunited again.

I quietly sneaked out of the house to leave them to their own reunion.

Flopping unto my bed, I stared at the ceiling, thinking everything over.

Finally I sat up and started doing my homework, trying to concentrate. After a few answers, I threw down my pencil in frustration and sat down at the laptop and started writing a very long email to Drew.

-Austin-

I carried Emma's suitcase into one of our empty rooms and watched as she made herself comfortable.

Emma turned to me with a smile and patted the bed beside her. "Sit down." She commanded.

I did as she said and turned to her. She traced the seams on the blanket before speaking. "Look, Austin I'm really sorry I didn't keep in touch. You're my twin brother and I should have done better. So are we cool?"

"No Emma. We, are not cool. You can't just leave, never contact and then unexpectedly come back." I answered angrily.

"So you want me to leave?" She asked softly.

"No I don't but I just wish you had done better." I replied a little more gentle.

"I know. And I'm really sorry." She stated.

I nodded. "Me too. I would have contacted you but I didn't know your email address or your number so I couldn't."

"Yeah I should have atleast told you." She answered.

I didn't reply but stared at the wall.

"Well, goodnight Austin." She said and patted my shoulder.

"Goodnight." I answered and walked out of the room.

I took a quick shower and then went out on my balcony. I could see Ruth at her laptop, typing furiously. I grimaced at the thought that maybe she was mad that I hadn't told her about my life.

I whistled and as she looked at me, I motioned to her to come out on her balcony. For a minute, I thought she wouldn't but after a few minutes, she came out.

"What do you need?" She asked.

"I'm sorry Ruth. For not telling you about this earlier." I apologized.

"Well it's not like you had to tell me everything. We're not a couple." She stated.

"Speaking of couples, I saw something shocking on Facebook." I added.

"Yes I know." She muttered and stared at her feet.

"You really like him huh?" I asked.

"Yes. Yes I do." She smiled softly at the thought of it.

I nodded slowly. "I thought so."

My phone buzzed and I looked at the message.

Nicole: "Hey Babe. I had an awesome time the other night. We should do it again. ;)"

Me: Totally. :-)

I smiled. We hadn't done much other then make out a little but it had been fun.

I felt a little bad for it but I shrugged it off.

"Earth to Austin!" Ruth leaned over the railing and snapped her fingers. "Something on your mind?" She asked.

"Yeah. Was just thinking of my girlfriend." I smirked.

"You have a girlfriend?" She asked, surprise in her tone.

"I sure do." I replied and grimaced. Now I had to get Nicole for my girlfriend.

"Who?" She asked.

"Oh I can't say that yet. It's still kinda secret." I winked.

She narrowed her eyes suspiciously at me but didn't say anything further about it.

"Well anyway Goodnight." She replied.

"Yea goodnight." I answered and went inside.

I flopped unto my bed and put on my earphones, staring up at the ceiling.

-Ruth-

I lay in bed, trying to figure out who Austin's girlfriend was.

After a while, I sighed in frustration and gave up. I would find out eventually.

My phone vibrated and I opened the message.

Randy: Goodnight babe.

Me: Goodnight Sweetheart. ;-)

I smiled and texted Alex and Emily a quick goodnight.

I was surprised to hear it start raining.I grinned and snuggled cozily under the warm covers.

I fell asleep to the soft patter of the rain on the roof.
