Dwight told Joshua and Ross to watch the bite because Demelza looked like she could be allergic. He told them that these horse flies have jaws that cut the skin instead of poke and you have to keep it clean of infection. So to keep it clean and dry. Demelza's hand was still swollen, but she knew they would be expecting dinner so she went out and started to make a fish pie and a chocolate cake for dessert. Ross heard her moving around and asked her what she was doing, Dwight and Joshua followed him into the kitchen. Dwight said, "you should be resting that arm and it must be kept clean and dry?" She said "what will you eat if I don't make it." Ross said "I will be your hands just tell me what to do." She said, "first we need to bake the cake for dessert." She told him to get the flour, chocolate baking soda, eggs, and to heat water and a few other ingredients. Then she told him in what order to put them in the bowl and when to add ingredients then mix. She told him to pour them into the cake pans and put them in the oven. Now she said "we need to clean the pilchards for the stargazey pie." Joshua and Dwight decided if they could do that. She told Ross "how to make the dough and roll it out, place the filling and the pilchards. Then place them in the oven. She said "you need to test the cake, to see if it is done if so take it out and let cooler. Now to clean the mess you all made." All three men had a new respect of what it takes to put supper on the table. After the mess was cleaned, she told them that once the cake was cool enough they would frost it. The pie should be done a in time for supper. Demelza started out the door, Ross said "where are you going to now?" She said "I have clothes on the line." Ross followed her he gathered all the clothes brought them into the house. He said "now what?" Demelza said "tomorrow I will press them and darn any holes."
She said "the cake can be frosted now," She told Ross how to make the frosting. Then she showed him how to put it in evenly. Dwight and Joshua was sitting watching and teasing Ross, when she told Joshua he could set the table and Dwight to check on the pie. Demelza went in to help Joshua showing him how to place the utensils. The pie was brought in along with the cake and they had a delicious meal but it lack Something that only Demelza could give it. They at the cake which was the answer to the Poldark sweet tooth, She told Dwight to take a piece of cake and pie home. Dwight again thanked Demelza for cleaning the Gatehouse. Since the men did the dishes and cleaned the the kitchen and dining room. Demelza sat in the parlor and thought about what her life was going to be like. She knew Ross would never see her as a possible or suitable wife and every time she saw him her heart jumped. Ross and Joshua came in she looked up and Ross smiled at her, she wanted to cry. Ross said "I didn't realize how much work it took just to get a meal on the table it gave me a whole new insight for a kitchen maid.  Demelza took that as a slight to her and her smile dropped she got up and told the men she was going to bed. Ross realized again his ability to communicate what he meant caused her her to be upset.
Jenny and Jim came back that evening and they thanked Joshua and Ross for the sheets. Ross said, "thank Demelza" he said "she is the one that wanted to give you something to call your own in the house," Jenny asked "where is Demelza" Ross said "she was bit by a horsefly and had a reaction." "There is some pie and cake out in the ice box if you are hungry," Joshua told them. The newly weds said they were tired and they were just going to bed.
It took two days for the swelling to go down. Which Demelza spent most of the time working in the garden. Leaving much of the household chores to Jenny. Demelza tried her best to stay out of the Ross's way. She was dreading the wedding but she told Joshua she would go and she would.
The night before the wedding Demelza asked Jim to bring the tub in the room. She bathed and Jenny came in and washed her hair, then she combed it and braided it. Demelza had just got out of the tub when their was a knock on the door and it opened. Demelza was wrapped in a towel and her long legs was visible he said, "OH" excuse me, I was wondering if you minded if I would use your bath water.  Demelza said "it is your home you can do what you like." Ross said "it is also yours." Demelza then said "we will put the hot water on if you will leave so I can dress." Ross said "right" and left the room. Joshua was sitting in the parlor when Demelza came out. He told Jim put two more buckets of water on so he may take a bath also. Demelza sat on the Capet staring into the fire. Her legs curled in under her. Joshua said "child what troubles you?" She gave him a sad smile, "I am failing my mother" she responded! "No your mother would not feel you failed her." he told replied! Demelza said "she told me to my own self be true and what if I can't, the person I want to be with, sees me as inferior and I'll never be good enough for him. So even if he would see me as someone he could be with , I would always be second best. Those are the two things she never wanted for me." Tears were fallen from her eyes. Ross was standing outside the door and heard it all. He wondered who this man was that held her heart. Joshua said "he may still come around," Demelza told him "no he does not want a miners brat or a kitchen maid and that is all I will ever be." Ross coughed and came in, Joshua got up and headed to the tub. Demelza sat for a couple more minutes and "she got up went to the back door and sat on the bench by the garden." Ross thought about what she said he had called her a miners brat. Did she mean him, that she had an attachment to! It couldn't be. He remembered what her long legs looked like and her long neck and her beautiful hair. No he couldn't think of her like that he loved Elizabeth!
He went and looked out the windows to the back and saw her sitting on the bench, he wonder who and what she was thinking about, he couldn't help thinking of her beauty sitting in the moon light!  Joshua came out and stood beside his son. "She has been hurt by so many and it irks me there are forces at work that would deny her happiness. Son why do you keep disparaging her heritage one thing I know and that is you didn't get that attitude from myself or your mother. Your mother was the epitome of a gracious lady but those of the social classes still tore her down every chance they got. You are doing the same to Demelza!"
"Father I don't disparage anything." "No you just can't help making her inferior to Elizabeth, you compare Demelza to Elizabeth's pedigree tell me why?" Ross ran his hand through his hair, "I think I will go to bed, night Father!" Joshua stood awhile longer wondering how he could ease her pain because his stubborn son was sure to cause her more!
Demelza wiped the tears from her eyes unaware of the tall gentleman staring out of the upstairs window. She got up and made her way to bed.
When she woke up she asked Jenny to get Master Joshua's and Master Ross's clothes for the wedding. Once the clothes were iron. She went back to her room and there on her bed was a beautiful dress. It was a silk underdress with a sheer overlay trimmed in a golden ribbon.  It was of the latest fashion high waisted and off the shoulders puffed sleeves and she felt somewhat indecent! Jenny walked in and said "Mr Joshua bought it and wishes you to wear it. Jenny helped her put it on, there was long white gloves, white stockings and green heeled shoe. There was ribbon with pearls that Jenny wove through her hair. Jenny said "Mistress I have never seen anyone more beautiful."
Demelza walked out into the parlor where Joshua, Ross and Dwight was waiting. She took Ross's breath away! Joshua said "my dear your are stunning" and kissed her knuckles. Dwight told her "Demelza you are a vision!" Demelza noticed that Ross did not say anything, which hurt Demelza immensely. Ross was unable to voice his thoughts. They walked to the church. Her hand on Joshua's arm. They walked in and was seated at the Poldark pew. Dwight sat on one end and Ross and Joshua on either side of her. Ross clenched his fist while Elizabeth and Frances recited their vows. When it came time to forsake if all others, Demelza couldn't help "huh" the people around her looked at her, she just raised her eyebrows. She didn't care, the man she loved, thought this woman walked on water. Demelza thought her being here was being unfaithful of her promise for her mother. The quickest way out of the church was by Ross's side. She moved and tried to get pass him at first he stayed fast not moving! Finally he step out of the aisle and let her pass. She went out to the cemetery looking at the graves. Noticing how barren it looked she went to the words and picked some spring flowers. She brought them back and placed them on Graces grave. She thought to herself. If you can hear me mom I am so sorry, maybe I should go back to father. My heart breaks every time I look at him. Aunt Grace I knew he is your son but he treats me as if I am trash when that woman in there getting married was having sex with Ross while engaged to Francis, yet I am trash! She stayed by the grave until Joshua came and found her. Joshua saw her distress, "my dear" she said "how can he admire someone like her and treat me like trash? Joshua I think I want to go back to Illogan, the beatings didn't hurt half as much as this!"
Joshua said "give it time child!" Dwight came upon them and noticing Demelza sad face asked "what is amiss?" Ross came over and said "that was extremely rude making that noise and then leaving!" Joshua and Dwight looked at him, then Demelza there they saw how much his words hurt her. Dwight thought she loves him and he is a fool to think she would agree to be second best to that woman.
Dwight took her arm and said "let me escort you Demelza. I would be the happiest of men with the most beautiful woman alive." Joshua have said, "It is considered rude to be more beautiful then the bride but your beauty and your goodness shine more brightly the brightest star. It would be a sin to hide your beauty."
