When Joshua came home later, first Ross wanted to know how he was going to handle Alyse. He told him that she told Demelza, he was meeting her at the cave. Joshua yelled, "is it true?" Ross answered back, "Of course not?" Joshua said, "I was hoping for Mary's sake that she would not be so belligerent to Demelza. I can see it is not to be so I will have Jim find her and tell her to leave Nampara grounds once and for all or be held on trespass charges." Ross said, "I am going this evening to confront him about the poaching so I will do it." Joshua nodded.
Ross brought up about their visitors telling his father of the conversation. Ross said, "it was the strangest thing while Elizabeth was inside it was beautiful but as soon as they went to leave it started to rain." Joshua said, "coincidence." Ross said, "Charles said, it happens every time she goes outside." Joshua said, "all rubbish talking about curses." Ross said, "I am with you, but it is strange." Ross replied, "I was short with Mary when she brought it up this morning Demelza hasn't said anything, but something is certainly bothering her." Joshua asked, "You don't think this talk about fairies and curses is disturbing her, do you?" Ross said, "I am not sure."
Joshua asked, "How is Demelza feeling? She was awake pretty much the night before, then last night she tossed and turned all night." Joshua said, "let's try to curtail any fairy or witch conversations. I will talk to Mary about it. With Jenny gone, I noticed Demelza doing most of the laundry and cooking again. Anne and Mary do the housework. Do you think we should hire another lady to help in the house?" Ross thought, "it may not be a bad idea, but I think it is something Demelza should do that, and the farm seems to be her domain." Joshua said, "I agree."
Now for Charles's issue. While in Truro today, I found out Gambier is on it last leg. They haven't been pulling ore out, they are just working the same old veins not looking for new. I would like you to come with me to investigate whether we feel it would be profitable for us to purchase it. If not, I fear Charles will either let Warleggan's have the mine or shut it down himself." Ross said, "it being the eldest and most profitable of the Poldark's mines, that would be ashamed." Joshua said, "so we will go an investigate?" Ross nodded. Demelza walked in and said, "investigate what?" Ross said, Gambier mine it seems that may be our way of helping France's Demelza had an idea, "may I come with you?" Ross and Joshua both said at the same time. "NO" She said, "not underground but above just to look around. Perhaps Elizabeth would like to be there?" "You want to spend time with Elizabeth?" "I just thought I would offer the olive branch so to speak see what she has to say." Ross said, "if that is your wish, I agree." Joshua smiled, "me too."
They told Demelza they thought she should hire a replacement for Jenny, which Demelza answered she was perfectly capable of handling Jenny chores. Joshua said, "you should not have to. You are Mistress of Nampara and should not have to do things for yourself." Demelza said, "I enjoy doing for myself." She said, "if someone presents themselves to me that I believe would be a good fit I will offer them the position." Now I do believe our meal is on the table, shall we go eat. Demelza played with her food, she did not have an appetite, Ross noticed and inquired if the food was not to her liking? She responded it was fine her stomach was a small bit upset that was all. Mary and Anne smiled at each other Joshua noticed their shared look then thought I wonder what they are up to? Demelza asked, "Ross if he would like to take a walk maybe go down to the cove and relax a bit?" Ross said, "while the sun is setting it is best to stay in the house." Demelza asked why?" It was Joshua that answered, "the Cove has smugglers in the eve. Better stary here while sun is going down." Demelza said, "oh I didn't realize." Joshua smiled and said, "why would you, do not worry dear you are safe in the house."
The next morning Joshua, Ross and Demelza mounted their horses and rode to Trenwith. They were escorted into the parlor. Unlike the day of the visit to Nempara, the weather was beautiful. Francis, Charles, Agatha, and Verity came into the room. Charles looked at Francis and asked, "where's Elizabeth?" Francis looked sheepishly at his father, "she has a blemish, and she refuses to come out of her room." Charles said, "nonsense boy go get her." A few minutes later Elizabeth came into the room, Agatha hooted, "the witches mark finally has come out, look at that wart." All eyes turned to Elizabeth, there on her chin was the start of what looked like a wart. Demelza inhaled, Elizabeth, gave her a nasty look, this is probably from that tea we drank yesterday." Charles said, "Elizabeth enough we all drank that tea including Demelza, not a one of us have a wart. Stop your nonsense." Ross side eyed Demelza and noticed she was almost in tears he grabbed her hand and raised it to his lips.
